Talking

34' Venture across canal ---" Gone ", entered a house with 3 people inside and removed boat keys from kitchen counter, slipped back out and took boat. then house across from that one and next to me had sliding door jimmied but did not get in. Woman inside not very happy. Has only had house 1 year, now may sell.
Law enforcement ??? do not need any here in pleasant ville. I doubt any thing will happen. 5 or 6 boats went missing last year and ....? I am unaware of anyone ever being arrested for boat theft here( sorry -Freeport). Spoke with someone at fuel dock. Fuel dock broken into at least 6 times in last year, several times the same night boats went missing. Get ready it's comming. Gun loaded and ready. best Fishes.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine last year on the 12th of december on GTC and the police were pathetic as to any kind of response and or investigation.Maybe when the money starts to go elsewhere people will wake up and put a stop to this, the persons who are doing this are known by qiute a few people on Abaco im sure.It is paradise but if you have the money to have a nice boat or house it can be trying.

I have an offer pending for land on TC. I was under the impression that ALL of Abaco and the cays were relatively crime free. I wasn't even going to figure locks into my budget. Should I reconsider the entire purchase? or is it a case a few bad apples. Any encouragement is welcomed.

lojack only works if the police were trying to find your car or boat???? i guess when the police dont have gas or money or a credit card to get gas for the police boat there is very little chance of ANYONE solving this case??? then when we put gas in the police boat and go to freeport the police there had very little interest in locking up people with contenders and ventures in their backyards with the numbers on the hulls and motors ALL GROUND OFF?????? when one ofe the victims flew there the next day the chief of police told him he was not going to take him to id his boat because..... "WE ALL MAY GET SHOT" HELLO??? i guess it is still paradise as long as you dont own a boat with yamaha motors at xmas time!!! maybe the us gov can help with this if they are told that these boats and motors will be used in drug and haitian trafficking i dont know? this has been going on for 20 years that i have been here and i doubt it will ever end, the bright side is at least they did this in a semi nonviolent fashion.... for now

Yes. Locks and lights, motion sensors. Maybe video and machinegun towers are next, this crap has been happening about 2-3 times per year. I know of at least 1 lift that had cables cut to drop boats and bolt cutters and other tools were left on seawall by another lift. I guess now i will need an alarm for boat. Great, now i have to hear that stupid chirp just like at home.

Moody, Disagree. Drug running is not any thing like it was in the early 80's. This place was the wild west. I do not see the same level of activity. Yes some of these boats get used for running drugs but I do not see bales on the flats anymore, or in weed lines while Dolphin fishing. To me only 3 reasons: Drugs, People and a 20k motor for free. I was told by someone local that the going price for smuggling people to U.S. is 3-5k per head, as good or better than drugs with alot less jail time, if any. I just see low life scum bags starting up here because law enforcement is so weak and corupt.

My statement was not meant in the direct sense of trafficing in an arround the Abacos or even the Bahamas. Many of the boats that are stolen are simply for the outboards. They unbolt them and send them to South America.

A drug smuggler from Columbia will pay a few thousand for a $15,000 engine. The guys stealling them just have to obtain them and get them shipped. If they get caught, its just a slap on the wrist.

The above scenario seems a little extreme. Crime is present anywhere you go. Unfortunately that is what makes up a society. We always lock our doors and windows in Treasure. I know many people who don't. If someone wants something bad enough they are going to find a way to get it.

I am going to make an assumption that these guys were strictly after drug running gear. Usually thieves that take risks like breaking into houses when people are home, are related to the drug scene.

With drug trafficing at an all time high and trafficing with small planes at an all time low, guys are using boats like this to get the job done.
Big outboards are in high demand by these guys and there is a huge supply of them out there. They will steal them where they are the easiest to get.

hmmmm. up front, best you open your eyes to what is rather than how you'd like it to be. and, "relatively" is the operational word, isn't it? it has been my experience that: 1. there is very little violent crime directed at 2nd home owners and visitors, but 2. if you don't secure your tings, they tend to go missing.

Hey, Kaliking....

I wouldn't worry - stuff like this isn't common in Abaco. Having said that, you should realize that Abaco's like anywhere else on earth... you get some great people, and you get some not so great people. There's always one or two people who have to spoil it for the rest. But Abaco seems to have way fewer of those people than most other places! :-)
