Rental house for large group

Hello all.

We are finally going to take the kids to the Abaco's. We plan on having two couples and 4 kids, and a sitter...so 9 total.

We were thinking of Man O War Cay, but not sure if there is a house big enough to rent. Any other suggestions? We want to have at least a restaurant on the island, but we'll plan on cooking most dinners.

Also, would it be more economical to charter a plane than commercial?? any one with experience with charters from Palm Beach?

Thanks,

Rob

A great place is Hardaground on Lubbers Quarters. It has 4 bedrooms and tv, a/c in bedrooms, and a private dock. It sits on a quiet sandy beach and faces the Tilloo Cut to the ocean, short( 3 minute) boat ride to Tahiti beach on Elbow Cay, walk to Cracker P's to eat. 10 minute boat trip to Hopetown for groceries, small shops, another great beach called North Beach, 10 minutes to Pelican Cays and Tilloo bank for extraordinary snorkeling. Haraground is beautifully maintained and has all you could want. Screened porch and awesome sunrise and view of the castle on Tilloo- lots of breeze because it faces the Atlantic/cut to Atlantic. We stay a few doors down every summer. Great place for kids because there is a sandy road around this 300 acre cay, with a small shelling beach on the other side of the cay which makes for a fun morning or late afternoon walk. Have a great trip!!!

I would suggest with kids Hope Town Area on Elbow Cay...alot more to do for the kids. LOTS of beach area shops and a cpl of places to eat also. MOW has only 1 place to eat and was not real impressed with it. MOW would be great for a cpl that wants it real calm...just do not see it for kids. JUST my 2 cents and that aint worth much.

We'd second Hardaground on Lubbers. Stayed there with our children and 3 grandkids last year. It was very hot during our visit and the AC was necessary. As stated before, the screened porch was wonderful. Much of our time was spent out on the dock. Our daughter brought a collapsible awning that we lashed out on the end of the dock that provided protection from the sun.

Big House

Rob.
Schooner's on MOW is a place that we used to take large groups because you can rent more than one unit so everyone has some "away" time from the group. Plus they have a pool that is right on the ocean. As for alcohol, bring your own.
Whereever you stay you and the kids will have fun.

4 BR 2 bath

We recently stayed at the Windward House in Marsh Harbour. Had 10 of us. It is on Eastern Shore, so very easy to hop in the rental boat and visit Cays. Also, it was close enough to grocery stores, restaurants, and other services for anything that was needed... You will have a great time!

Thumbs up

The Causarina's Beach House on Treasure Cay's beautiful beach is a great house. Very large 6 bedroom 6 bath, great room, kitchen, out door decks, pool and right on the beach.

To Marty

Marty- The only link I have is through abacovacations.com. Click on link for Lubbers Quarters Cay, then click on property list for Lubbers- there are lots of pix of house and the Cay, too.You might find it by searching the internet under Hardaground or Lubbers Quarters, Abaco. I do not have a direct link to owners. I am not sure, but Laurie Schreiner manages many homes on Lubbers Quarters, and she is at downdeep@abacoinet.com. She can be hard to reach at times due to island communications snafus, but she is in the know as far as Lubbers rentals go. Hope that helps!

You should look at Turtle Hill Villas on Elbow Cay. The villa rental includes a golf cart, there is a swimming pool (2 actually) and a bar/grill (On Da Beach) on site with a good swimming beach right in front of the villas. It is on the Atlantic side of the isalnd so you get the "beach" feel and they have their own dock for the rental boat a short cart ride away. The resort features 4 - 2 bedrrom units and 2 - 3 bedroom units so you can get one or more units to fit the group size that you end up with.

If you do want to stay on MOW there are several options of places to eat. The Hibiscus Cafe serves really good lunches and is also opened for dinner on Thursday and Saturday nights. Everything I've ever had for dinner there was excellent (garlic shrimp, coconut shrimp, any fish dish, fried chicken...) The Pavilion has good lunches too and is opened Friday and Saturday nights for dinner and has The Best Ribs in my opinion. Every time I go there I have those ribs. There is also Island Treats that is take-out and serves lunch and dinner most nights and there is also a new take-out place. We have not tried either one of those yet. If there's any information you need while there, just ask around. Everyone is so nice and helpful.

Getting There - I have never been to Abaco but booked my flight for August. I checked all kinds of air fare - charter and commercial. I made out better with commercial.
