Will a cell phone with Verizon service work in the Bahamas (esp Abaco)?

Our Verizon phones work intermittantly in Marsh Harbour, maybe 1 of 10 outgoing calls get connected. No incoming calls. Don't depend on your phone here.

Will a cell phone with Verizon service work in the Bahamas (esp Abaco)?

I tried Verizon Jan 20 to 29 last week from Marsh H., Hope Town and Tilloo with "no service" whatsoever. As I was walking by the BATELCO tower in MHH I even tried within 50 feet of it as a joke but no dice. A friend had Cingular and could receive calls in all of those places no problem but could not send.
