We need to ship large and small household furnishings to Hope Town. How to do it and is there no high-quality shopping option in the Bahamas? Thanks.

High quality is in the eyes of the beholder, but there is a furniture store in Marsh Harbor somewhat affiliated with Rooms To Go. There seems a to be a fairly good choices of suites

Hope this helps:
1) Aquaint yourself with the names of the shipping lines who serve the Riviera Beach to Marsh Harbour route by calling one of the customs brokers in MH and obtaining the phone #'s in Florida.
Or Google for the info.
2) Call the shipping line of your choice and make yourself known. Ask their advice on how you should deliver/ship your stuff. They will consolidate your various purchases, if requested, and ship to you under one Bill of Lading and/or load into a container to save you shipping costs.
3) If buying from several sources, consider having the supplier deliver the goods direct to the port. This way you will not have to pay FL sales tax as they will be marked 'for export'. However, they charge for delivery (around $50-60) which on big purchases will save you money, time and effort.
4) Concentrate your buying around the West Palm Beach area. There, most suppliers are familiar with shipping to The Bahamas. Go upsate and you may be faced with blank looks! Not all stores are willing to deliver to the port however (e.g. Pottery Barn) so - be prepared to pay the tax and deliver it yourself.
5) All goods you buy and personally take to the shipping line will attract state sales tax (On which Bahamas duty is charged!)
6) Your customs broker/agent in Marsh Harbour can arrange to clear your goods and ship to Elbow Cay.
7) Don't expect anything to happen quickly. Backlogs are still evident several months after the hurricanes.
8) Contact to NEMA in MH to see if you qualify for a duty-free exemption which, I believe, has been extended to March 31/05 on some items, mainly those replacing items damaged in the hurricanes.
9) There are furniture stores in Marsh Harbour but (matter of opinion) I don't think they carry high-end merchandise. But worth checking.
10) You may want to enquire about the available stores in Nassau which may have a larger choice.
Good Luck!

Thanks much! I'll proceed as suggested and hope for the best. Good news to hear that they can consolidate my items into one container. Just what i was hoping! Thanks again.

Shipping with one of the companies out of Palm Beach is one very cost-effective possibility. In case you want to avoid the backlog and need your things faster, look into an air cargo arrangement from Palm Beach to MHH. More expensive, but you have it quicker. E-mail me for more info.

Haha! Not the DIY type! We're going to Elbow to get away from chores like that. Maybe someone there does this kind of thing for hire????

Bella's /Rooms to Go/ Western Auto.. in Marsh Harbour have been very helpful at getting furniture.. we were able to even get "on sale" merchandise from the rooms to go - online cataloque.. it won't be the same price but if it arrives damaged "they will take care of it" if you import it .. good luck getting satisfaction if it is shipped from the US. We were able to pick custom fabrics for upholstery and get extra of the same cloth to make other cushions etc.
Wood you in Marsh harbour has some excellent 'solid' wood furniture and we also purchased a fair bit from them.
in essence we set up the whole house with furniture bought in Marsh Harbour..

Thank you, Neil. Sounds like we might be "neighbors" if we end up buying into the house we're visiting. It also sounds, after a few emails with the owner, that we have an abundance of furniture. So what I'm going to need is shipping, mostly, and am hoping to join with anyone else shipping from WPP to MH in a container. Hope to meet you in Hope Town!

Wood You is on Don Mckay (aka Airport Rd), near the intersection with Forest Dr. It's right next to the Esso station on the corner. They are quite pleasant and helpful, and they have some very nice, reasonably-priced furniture.
