No ferries, and yes you will need a passport. But take heart, flying to Nassau is cheaper than flying to many other destinations in The Bahamas.
If traveling by sea, you can still use an offical birth certificate and driver's license up until June of this year (better to just get a passport).
There is a ferry (Discovery Cruises) that travels from Ft. Lauderdale to Freeport Bahamas but I do not know of a similar service to Nassau/Paradise Island. We had an issue with Discovery Cruises last week. My daughter was scheduled to use them for a Senior Class spring break trip. We fortunately discovered 2 days before departure that the ship was broken and wouldnt be sailing -- I say fortunately because official notice was not sent until 12 hours before the ship was to depart. We were lucky to have enough time to make other arrangements. One person in the group did not have a passport and had to miss the trip. Still waiting on the refund to my credit card.

As of July 1 --yes, must have a passport. I would fly---very reasonable!

Depending upon what country you ARE a citizen of, The Bahamian Government may require a visa as well. Check with your Embassy in the USA.

Rumors on a Bridge, Nippers and Sheik Abdula Frangipani of Dubai
This was very funny, from a few years ago. It will make the 2 previous "bridge" comments make sense.
