All,
I've visited Tilloo Cay. Stayed at Jim's place near the Cut. I own a Carver 396 and am interested in keeping it in the Abacos as my vacation home. I was trying to find a reasonably priced marina in the fall or winter. Any thoughts on Marinas that offer good rates for yearly slip rental? It's a 40 ft boat and I'd really like to keep the cost under $650 per month if at all possible including utilities.

I kept my sailboat at Sea Spray Resort & Marina on White Sound (Elbow Cay) for several years. It is a lovely place to hang out and is in a very sheltered location.
Before I moved my boat to a mooring at M-O-W last year Sea Spray was charging $600/ month (Sept. 1 - March 31) and $800/ month for the rest of the year. This price was for boats up to 49'. Water and electric cost extra. I think you'll find similar prices at the other Abaco marinas.
If you don't plan to use your boat very frequently, you can arrange dry storage at a couple boatyards (Abaco Yacht Services on GTC and Lighthouse Marina in Hopetown). This should cost you less than $300/month.
Renting a mooring is another way to go and they are available in Hopetown, M-O-W, GGC, and GTC. Cost for a mooring will run you around $250/month.
I hope you find this information helpful.
Talk to Hope Town Hideaways Marina. I believe they are offering good rates for long term rentals with lots of amnenities.

Call Rudy at Hope Town Marina. He has mooring in the harbour at Hope Town as well as dock slips.
Not sure of his rates, but I expect that they will be competitive. 242-366-0003 is the tel #

For leaving a boat at any marina it is iffy. We have found that the best bet is leaving it on a mooring at MOW and renting dockage when you are there. MOW is, I believe, about the safest and most secure place in the Abacos. Call Jay or Samantha at Waterways boat rental for more information. Good people.

I believe you will end up having to pay the Bahamian tax on your boat. It used to be 7% of the value of your boat and it was good for the life of your boat. Can anyone tell me if that is correct?

Jim,
Upon entering the Bahamas by boat you must purchase a cruising permit. The cost is based on the size of the boat and is good for 1 year.
If you keep the boat in the Bahamas for more than 1 year, you must apply for a renewal. For my 30 ft. boat, this cost $500.00. You can get 2 renewals before you must take the boat out of the country or pay the import duty. Of course, you could leave the country, check back in, and the 3-year cycle begins anew.
I was fortunate that the fellow I bought my boat from in Nassau had paid the import duty when he moved to the Bahamas. Now, my annual Bahamian registration costs me $100.00 year and I can keep my boat in the Bahamas for as long as I want.

We keep our boat at Hopetown Hideaways and have really enjoyed the experience. Great facility and good service. They are doing more long term prices. Call Chris at the office in Hopetown. Good luck.

Thanks for the great advice everyone. Moving my boat from a landlocked reservoir to the Tennessee River system tomorrow! I am so excited about making the trip to the Abacos. Tons of planning to do...

Leeward Winds, the new development in Black Sound on GTC, is doing introductory dockage at .63/Ft. I'm sure in this economy they would make you a good deal for long term. I'll note their # the next time I go by and PM you.

See you guys in a week!!! BTW do you guys have a copy of "Winds From the Carolinas" at Plum Crazy that I could borrow while I'm there? I have not been able to find a copy locally. Also sounds like we need to have a sizable Coco Bay birthday gathering. Mine was the 4th when was/is yours? I think Louie and Maggie also have April b'days. That's a lots of Aries for one little area don't ya think?
Hope all is well,
Susan

Susan,
Posted this book last October. Sent it at no charge to a Board member who responded to my post. Can't find his name or address.
Hopefully he will see your post and send it along to you. You may wish to start a new thread in order to get his attention.
Have a great trip!

Hi Alan, thanks for the heads up on the book! Also Hubby just returned and advised me that I got the location of Leeward Yacht Club wrong (I still love him, though). It's on the other side from Roberts Cottages ,same side as Abaco Boat Yard (I knew that, but got Robert's wrong, sorry Scott & Susan. See you both soon too!). Anyways it's not hard to find since, Black Sound is not all that big! Boy do I need a vacation:D!
