My Friends are traveling to Abaco in March and they have a Black Lab. What are the rules on Dogs traveling on the airlines? Must they be kept in a kennel while onboard? Does anyone know the law on this subject?

I think the laws have changed. Before all you needed was a health certificate from your vet but now they want you to go to some web site and download a form and fax to them ahead of time for approval. It may also just have been easier at Walkers. Be sure before they go as it is a big deal if you don't get approval ahead of time. They made a friend of mine come home.

Most major air carriers require kennels, check with the airline as most don't allow any animal travel during the winter months.( not sure where your flying from ) You also need a permit and I have attached the link.

Good luck, we bring our 2 large kids with us and they love it.

Be sure and have the permit form from Nassau as Flying Dogs stated and have your local Vet fill out the certification. Most airlines do require animals to be in kennels, hovever, the smaller carriers often do not. We recently flew with our 90 lb Golden Retriever on Cherokee from West Palm and the dog sat with us in the Cabin without a kennel. It went very smoothly. Check with Cherokee, Yellow Air Taxi, Calypso, etc as I'm sure they all have different policies. In addition, if you planning on taking the dog on a ferry, the ferry requires it to be in a kennel unless you charter the ferry. Have fun!

We have to charter because even the larger carriers won't allow 2 dog crates onboard. We have used several different charter co's and most are in the $1200 - $1800 range for each leg. I believe Cherokee quoted $1475 last year for a return from Marsh to FLL. If you would like more info, please ask, flyingdogs Josh & Frannie

Thanks for the link to the form. I needed one too. If we are only bringing our dog into Abaco for 1 week (not a full time import) do we still need to present the dog to a licensed vet in the Bahamas, as stated in paragraph (c)?

Thanks

No need to call Nassau. Call Mrs. Martin at the Dept of Agriculture. Sorry don't know the phone off hand but we bring our babies in all the time. Just need the $10 permit. It should meet you at the airport so ask your taxi driver to pick it up and bring it when they come get you.
