Hi--I have been trying to contact the folks at Abaco Outback (birding, snorkeling trips) via e-mail and have gotten no reply--just a message that there had been some hurricane-related problems. Does anyone know if they are still in business? Would anyone know a phone number? We are thinking of going to Abaco in March and were hoping to do a day of birding with them. Is there much hurricane damage still evident in the Abaco area? We were thinking of staying in Marsh Harbor and taking day trips to some of the other cays. Thanks so much!!

Erin and her family are staying here on Guana for awhile. I'll tell her about your post unless she sees it before I can tell her.

They are working on cleaning up and getting trips planned. Should be doing fine by March! Keep trying, they will be back in business soon!

Hi again--I still haven't heard from these folks and am getting a bit short on time as far as making a decision about whether to go to Abaco in March. I tried calling and e-mailing but no luck. Would anyone know of anyone else who might have information on birding on Abaco? I am particularly interested in whether the hurricanes had a significant impact on the local populations of "Bahama specialty" birds and whether birding locales are still accessible. I have the ABA Guide to Birding the Bahamas but was hoping to get some up to date information before committing planefare etc for the family! Many, many thanks--I've really enjoyed reading this board.

You could try prevailing on the goodwill of Patty Toler of Abaco Cruisers' Net to contact Erin. Heard Abaco Outback on the 'Net this morning announcing she'll be starting tours anytime but would only be reachable on VHF CH16 or landline. (Didn't note the # -sorry).

Try emailing Patty on cruisers@cocotels.net and she'll either give you her # or try to reach her on your behalf.

Good Luck!

Glad you got ahold of Erin. I was just talking to her and she asked me to pass her cell phone number along to everyone who might need to contact her. It's 242-477-5682. She says too be persistent when calling. They are ready to start work again!!

Erin still doesn't have a computer. They are still living here on Guana but is trying to get some trips organized. But I will tell her to contact you as soon as she gets a computer.

When I got here in Nov, most of the birds were gone. I now see some Hummer's but it's still pretty bleak!
I think the hurricains took a major toll on the population,

Right after the hurricanes many of the parrots were seen on Man of War for the first time. The residents were trying to convince them to stay. Maybe it worked.

Thanks so much for the phone number. We were just down there for one week and stopped over over 5 times at their place and the door was open, but no one was inside. We asked around, and no one knew where they were. We were hoping to take the kayaking trip. I am pleased to know that they will be back in business in March. By the way, the Abacos were really just beautiful. I am impressed with how much work has been done and how normal it all looked. It must have been an incredibly difficult job to make everything look so great so quickly.
