local pharmacies have honored my prescriptions, leastwise for limited quanitities, usually with just the empty container for documentation.

My doctor writes my prescription for a 6 month supply. Explain your situation to your doctor and he/she may prescribe for the full period you require...

Prescriptions written (or even faxed) by US physicians will generally be filled by The Chemist Shop without question.

Be aware however that in some cases the exact brand is not always available in Abaco and a generic (often cheaper) alternative may be substituted. In some cases an exact substitution for a generic brand is not always possible without advance notice, so it is worth making a phone call to The Chemist Shop or Island Pharmacy before you arrive (242-367-3106 or 367-2544 respectively) if you have any concerns or questions.

As a last resort, you could pay a visit to one of the local doctors who I'm sure would be pleased to help you and write a short-term prescription.

As a side note, if you have a chronic medical condition that could result in a serious problem while you are here, you should contact one of the local physicians well before making firm travel arrangements. They can then advise if, given the limited local resources, your trip is advisable.
Please also note that this type of consultation is not free.

Visitors (even healthy ones) also need to check with their health plan or insurance company to make sure you have the appropriate coverage for the Bahamas which may require emergency (and very expensive) air transport to a hospital in Nassau or West Palm Beach.

From all the HTVFR Medical Call Out Records we can tell you that most of our "customers" were perfectly healthy before they had their problem.

My insurance carrier (Blue Cross) will only consider one month's supply of drugs eligible for reimbursement at a time. Since we are often gone for 3 or more months I asked how I could have all 3 months' drugs eligible and was told I can ask BC for a special consideration in advance of getting the drugs. I like to stock up in case we get delayed but I sure don't want to pay for stuff the insurance company would normally pay for!

Hi, you might want to check with your company representative on this. On my plan (Blue Cross also) we can get a 3 mo supply if that is the way the Dr. perscribes it. It may depend on the medication or the Doc, but it's worth a check as the co pay is the same (ie there are both cost & convenience benefits).
