hi my name is mary beth,

I am 12 years old. This spring break I am coming to Elbow Cay for the second time. On your site, I saw that someone went to a local school while they were visiting , and I wanted to do the same thing. Please let me know how I can visit the school on Elbow Cay during my visit this year.

To the best of my knowledge the school on Elbow Cay (Hope Town) is a Primary school...1st -6th grades. This means the kids your age ride the ferry to Marsh Harbour to attend school.

If they don't mind, sixth grade is OK with me. I just want to learn more about where they live and can share about where I live with them. Does anyone know how I can contact the school? Thanks MB

Mary Beth,

I don't know when you're scheduled to go to Abaco, but if it isn't during their Spring Break which I think is
March 19 - April 4th

you will most certainly be welcomed at the Hopetown Primary School. The principal is Mrs. Candance Key. One of my favorite teachers, Nancy Burnett, teaches the classes of older students. They are very used to people visiting.

You probably know that two strong hurricanes hit the Abacos this season. The library near the government docks was badly damaged, many of the books had to be thrown away b/c the library was under four feet of water. I have collected a number of books I'm sending over, but you might want to collect some to gift to the school or the library (the same kids will use them either way).

I don't know where you're from, but you might want to do a take-off on Flat Stanley. Students I know enlarge a picture of their teacher, principal, or President Bush. It's easily packed b/c it folds up accordian style and is packed in luggage. and as part of their interaction with the Abaco kids, take digital pictures of this image with the Abaco kids (and YOU, of course). Let the Abaco kids suggest the best places and you'll have a terrific time with them. Then think of something Abaco-like. Perhaps a person (Mrs. Key, principal; or Ms. Burnett, teacher) or a thing (Abaco lighthouse). Take a digital picture and enlarge it when you get home and take pictures around your community of the Abaco thing, a special home place (and YOU, of course). These can be sent back over via email attachment so everyone can enjoy them. Those folks back home will enjoy the Abaco pix and the Abaco kids will double-enjoy your back home pix. I know Ms. Burnett uses the internet and has an email account, so this is very do-able.

I am going to Abaco the weekend of January 29th and will probably see Nancy and will tell her you're coming. Give me dates...you can send them by email: Sharon.Kossack@fiu.edu
