Found this peacock on my front porch. What an awesome bird, are they friendly??? I heard there was 1 on our island. Should I feed it??

What do they eat?? Anyone have them in there yards?

What a beautiful bird you have there! We live on a farm and have had peacocks in the past. They are good at scrounging around the place for food, and I believe they eat bugs. I know they would peck at the dead bugs on our car bumpers for hours! Of course, some chicken "scratch" is always good, but I'm sure that is not readily available to you! The downside to having a peacock (as opposed to a pea hen) is that if they see their reflection in a window, he may jump up and "fight" his reflection. I came home from work many a day to see a huge mess on my sunroom window and another mess to match it on the deck! So I guess what I'm saying is that it's best to establish a place for him (via feeding him scraps or something) that is not too near the house!

Thanks KNoel. I read on google that they get easily stressed and they like peace & harmony. He will enjoy Lubbers. I have no idea, how he got here. Any body know?

Who knows, I may not see him again. I can get corn feed in MH.

Patti,

I just wonder what else in your neighborhood might like some corn scattered on the ground?

Make excellent watch dogs, almost as good as Guinea fowl. Don't want them around orchards or farms that rely on bee hives for pollinating though, they catch and eat them, so one is plenty.
Big Bird farm did sell feed I think, but not sure if they still do (Purina distributor). We always had chick feed come from Nassau on the Stede Bonnet, and had the sacks to make shirts and dresses.

He's gorgeous Patti. Thanks for the picture. You are right, he will love Lubbers. You've gotta name him if he stays. What does Wilson think of him?

Hugs to you and Eddie,
Sam

We saw one at Different of Abaco last year. It was checking out our car as we were walking around! We were just talking about them last week...my nephew said someone he knows just throws a hand-ful of dry cat food out about once a week.

I am learning more about him. The peacock has a name.....Petie. And been on the island for 2 years.

He eats crackers, cookies, fruit and left over veggies. I placed water out for him, but he has not been around.

Hank G.- Your right all the birds will be flocking around. ;)

Sam- Wilson has not been introduced yet, but Petie just might be in bed with all of us. Who knows....

MJTaz- no cat food here, I will try dog food.

Hope I can get a picture with tail flaired. Thanks for all the help.

Second half's comment about watchdogs - they can be very terriotrial and protective of "their" people.

DrGecko went through a spell where he wanted them on our farm. They chased visitors who would come up the driveway, one pecked my cousin in the eye when we were playing and pooped all over my saddles. Eventually they started wandering off through the woods and roosting near our closest neighbor's house (ever tried RETRIEVING the buggers?) and we finally sent them to a more remote farm.

very pretty, but you won't find me near them!

Thanks abbyliz- I wouldn't want them to chase our guests either.

I only saw him once and he was running away, probably a good thing. There is only 1 on the island, so they will not be multipying.

Thanks for all your help and everyone's opinions.

Amazing things have happened since our last visit it appears. How are the other two residents of Summerview accepting Petie?

Island Wings- What a nice surprise...we were just wondering about you both. We were just asking about you.

We have not seen Petie since the first glimpse. Only 1 rare encounter but we hear he is further north on the island.

Come on down, we miss you.:)
