We're getting close to spring, and there is a lot of interest in information about fishing . I am currently updating my article about fishing in Abaco. If you are a guide, you run fishing charters, or you've been out with someone who is a guide and would like to recommend them, please post here or send me an email. I'll include the info in the updated article. Thanks very much in advance.

I can highly recommend Ricky Sawyer on GTC. (He advertises on this board as Abaco Flyfish Connection). While he specializes in flats fishing for bones, permit, etc. he also has the best equipped sportsfisher for deep sea. I was out with him a couple of weeks ago and caught an eleven pound bonefish. Bonefish are now more plentiful than ever.

Hey Ralph,

Since you're updating the fishing article I would like to edit my piece on bonefishing. Remove my reference to the "NRS RIVER BOOT BY NRS" in the clothing section of my article. I have done quite a bit of field testing of that product since my original assessment and have found the boots to be inadequate for use in areas where the bottom is soft and silty (which is what is mostly found in Abaco). Thanks!

W.L.

Willy, your reference to NRS river boats has been deleted as requested. Nice to hear from you, glad you're still out there.

George, can you give me some contact info for Ricky Sawyer: phone, email? Would a client have to depart from GT, will he go to other cays? Thanks so much for the help.

Ralph,

I highly recommend Ronnie Sawyer for bonefishing for beginners or experts, fly or spinning.

He was featured on George Poveromo's ESPN show two years ago and knows all of my secret bonefishing spots in and around GTC. LOL

Dr Ralph,

I have been blessed to have been able to spend many months over a lot of years fishing in the Abacos.
I have fished with many guides, as well as local friends. The following are in my opinion the very best available in their respective locations.

HOPE TOWN / ELBOW CAY:
Robert Lowe
Robert on the Seagull is probably the most respected fisherman in all of the Abacos. Robert trolls for Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, Tuna, and Dolphin from a 31' flybridge with double line outriggers. If Robert doesn't put you on fish, the fish are not around.

CHEROKEE SOUND:
Randy Sawyer / Marty Sawyer
Randy and Marty are two of the finest fishermen you will ever meet. They don't actually fish together, they each run their own charters.
Both specialize in flyfishing for everything from Bonefish to Sailfish, but both troll as well if that is what the guests want. Randy is also quite an expert at bottom fishing for Red Snapper and Grouper. Either of these young men will show you the time of your life, and you will catch fish.

GUANA CAY:
H&R Fishing Charters
Henry Sands is a life long fisherman, and boatsman with a happy, friendly way about him that makes him a true pleasure to be around. Henery specializes in offshore fishing, but works with his clients to give them the kind of trip they want.
WEB-SITE: h-scharters.com

These are all young men who I have fished with, and I believe they are some of the best anywhere.

Hope I have been of some assistance,
R.

I'm still looking for info about fishing guides. Is there anyone else out there besides those who have already been mentioned? Thanks in advance.

I strongly echo R's recommendations of Marty and Randy Sawyer. Another option is JR Albury out of Casuria Point.... JR is a great guy.

Doc,
You'd be remiss not to check on Down Deep and Lucky Strike.
Both captains, Michael Schreiner and Truman Major are Hopetown natives and excellent captains.

Mark & Rock, do you have any contact info?

Doc,
Michael's information can be seen at www.discoverabaco.com (http://www.discoverabaco.com/). His e-mail address is downdeep@abacoinet.com and phone # is 242-366-3143. Michael resides on Lubbers Quarters.

As for Truman, I believe he's listed in the cruisers guide. He has a Hopetown phone # which I currently can't locate. His call sign is Lucky Strike on 16.
I'm sure someone on the board like the Tolers could get you that info.

RS P.S. Truman's # is 242-366-0101.

Dr. Ralph,

Have fished about all the Abaco Islands in my "Long" years. Robert Lowe out of Hopetown is as good as it gets!

Dr. Ralph, watermen and all,

I'd appreciate a little info about sharks if you're putting together something. Some people like to catch-n-release very large sharks, for just a picture, which is a growing sport (I like the release part - big sharks aren't good eating). Some people read information in the media about sharks, like shark attacks on surfers and divers in the Bahamas, and won't put a toe in the water. -Sam
