Hello everyone,
I have just been informed by Continental that it would require a visa before boarding a flight if we wanted to stay in Abaco longer than one month. Does anyone know what is involved to apply for one, and how long it would take? Thanks in advance.

BRUCE, RED JACKET WAS TOLD THE SAME THING A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO.
I CHECKED CONT. AS WE FLY THEM OUT OF PORTLAND ME. AND WAS INFORMED THAT INFORMATION REGARDING 'VISA' IS MISLEADING AND RESULTS FROM CERTAIN AGENTS TRYING TO EXPLAIN THAT IT IS UP TO BAHAMAS OFFICIALS TO GRANT YOU LONGER THAN A MONTH'S STAY UPON YOUR ARRIVAL. NEVER HEARD OF A PROBLEM IN THAT RESPECT OR ENCOUNTERED ONE OURSELVES.
BOTTOM LINE IS: NO VISA REQUIRED FOR STAYS OVER 30 DAYS, JUST PERMISSION FROM THE AUTHORITIES.

Do you get the permission in writing via mail, so you can show it to the airline? Otherwise there is a chicken/egg thing going on there...

Just spoke with a gentleman at the Bahamian embassy in DC, and he assured me that an American citizen can stay for three months without a visa. Whew! I thought I might be up against a bunch of paper work. See you all sooooooon!

Syd,

Immigration has been steadily reducing the automatic time allowed for visitors.
I understand that the norm is now max 120 days admission at the airport. If you want to extend further then another visit to the Immigration office in Marsh Harbour is necessary to a maximum of 8 months.
