I don't know how, but I just got through (10 a.m EST) on the regular 242- phone to my parents who live on Ocean Blvd. (TC Beach). No electricity of course, "horrible" wind, some soffit (sp?) has blown off of their roof ... the ocean has not yet come into their yard. A friend of theirs just dropped of about 10 crewmembers from a supply ship; they were planning to ride out the storm in the ship (apparently they filled it w/water to "sink" it to the sand and make it heavy). But I guess that plan didn't work out so well, so they left the ship and are now in my parents guest house. That's it for now, if I talk to them again I will post another update :-)

We own a Bahama Beach Club condo and will welcome any news of damage. We have owners waiting to fly in supplies so need to know most wanted items to make sure they are covered.

Staying ahead of Frances:

Erica and I left Treasure Thursday at around 11:00 AM on the last Vintage flight out. Five takeoffs and five landings later (boy glad those two were equal!!!) we arrived home in South Carolina around 10:00 PM. Vintage Airlines has been great while we rescheduled our early departure from Abaco to arrive in Melbourne and connect to Delta home to South Carolina. We were originally scheduled to stay until Saturday. When Delta couldn't get us home from Melbourne on Thursday, Vintage graciously agreed, with no request for a credit card, to take us on to Orlando so Delta could get us home from there. I went through two Delta agents and finally a customer service agent at Delta before they were convinced not to charge each of us $100 change fee because they couldn't get us out of Melbourne. Wednesday at Noon, Delta did not have their "Hurrican policies" in effect so they wanted to charge us or make us wait in Melbourne until Ffiday night to fly home...well after some persistence...well maybe a lot...they agreed these were extenuating circumstances and there would be no charge.

We left Treasure around 11AM on an 18 passenger prop plane under windy conditions. Really nice plane, looked new, and had Island Air on it which I understand is owned by the same person who owns Vintage. Once airborne the pilot informed us he was unable to get gas in Marsh Harbour because the fuel trucks were blocked in by other vehicles getting ready for the storm and they couldn't find the owners. There was no fuel in Treasure so he made arrangements with Freeport to stop there and refuel. He said we could make it to Florida, probably on fumes, but that it was illegal for him not to have at least forty-five minutes of extra fuel. That was fine with us....so landing number One - Freeport. Since some of the offices in Freeport were closed the pilot had to keep running from the landing office to the main office to pay fees, pay for fuel and file flight plans....and he did run. We were there maybe forty-five minutes and were not allowed off the plane and I'm thinking wish I hadn't had those three glasses of cranberry juice! Once airborne again we had about an hour to Daytona...landing number two! Melbourne customs was closed and Orlando wouldn't take us so we had to land in Daytona to clear. Thank goodness there is a restroom right inside the door in Daytona customs. The lady officer in customs was great.

The plan now was to take the five passengers on the large plane to New Smyrna and take three of us on the smaller 9 passenger plane to Melbourne..then onto Orlando. Vintage waited while we doubled check with Delta to see if they could fly us out of Daytona instead of Orlando....that was a no go..everything booked. So we hopped on the plane and headed for Melbourne. I was snapping a couple of pictures of the coast and the pilot indicated a couple of pictures of the parking lot on I-95 might be interesting...man was it a parking lot! There were several passengers arriving in Daytona that were headed up I-95...as far as Greenville, SC. Normally it is an eight hour trip...yesterday, probably at least double that. When we saw I-95 from above we felt for them. We landed in Melbourne...landing number three, dropped the gentlemen off (he has a home in Leisure Lee in Abaco and now was headed to meet his family to get his three cars from Melbourne to Orlando) We then headed for Orlando...just Erica, myself and the two pilots.

As we flew from Melbourne to Orlando we could see a sea of blue tarps on the houses around Orlando still not recovered from the effects of Charley. Now Frances is threatening. When we arrived at the Signature terminal in Orlando...landing number four...there we twenty-plus FEMA people in the lobby. We asked the driver on the way to the main terminal "what's up with that?"...he said they were there because of Charley and were trying to get out before Frances hit...I guess so they'd be ready to come back in when it was over. Florida has really been slammed.....and going to be slammed again. We wish them well.

Now we have a five hour wait in the Orlando airport.....got checked in.....had to dig through luggage to find the packed film...many rolls...because the machines would destroy it...then decide to grap a bite at Chili's before we headed to the security line which looked like the lines at Disney World on July 4th weekend! Good thing we had four more hours....well it took us a little over an hour with security. Relaxed in one of the lounges....eyes on the weather channel and listening to all the meteorologists of the day predicting the storm. It is amazing to me that some people just can't figure out that everyone else in the lounge does NOT want to listen to their cell phone conversations!!!!! Man this guy was loud. Last flight home....landing number five...was smooth and uneventful. Glad when AbacoWilly met us at the airport.

Lessons learned & thanks:

Vintage is the greatest...well I knew that...but now they are really the greatest. They are genuinely concerned about there customers and my hats off to the owner.

Have to be really pushy with commercial airlines and ask for customer service when the agent doesn't seem to have a heart.

Daytona is on the top of my lis,t along with Melbourne, as US citizens customer friendly.

As usual, thanks to Sinc and Barbara for a great stay and use of the internet and phones to get us out of there.

Thanks to Gordon (Nealy) Murray as the most fabulous taxi driver and friend in Treasure. He wouldn't leave the airport until he knew Vintage was coming for us.

Earlier in the week when there was a possibility of Frances staying on a southerly course we discussed staying....as the track went more to the northwest we made plans to leave and I'm glad we did. Yes our vacation was cut short by two days...but that's the risk you take when booking during hurricane season. Two days short on the vacation is nothing compared to what the people in Frances’ path are going to experince.

Our thoughts and prays are with those of you in Abaco and also in Florida in harms way.

Just spoke to my husband on a satellite phone(11am). He is in my parent's house on the first canal, Brigantine Rd. Water is coming over the sea wall, small trees in the yard are down, wind is getting stronger, everything else as expected. At 10 am the batelco phone was still working, right now I'm not getting a connection anymore. I will pass on any further messages from him. Thanks to all the good people out there who try to keep us in touch!

My husband just now called me again on the sat.phone. Winds are up to 100 mph now. Seawater has come above the canal and our lawn is submerged approx. 3 feet in. As this is high tide we're hoping it won't get much worse. He doesn't know of how things look anywhere else. Will keep everyone informed as soon as I hear more. He said that Mother Nature is really something else.... watched his boat bouncing up and down on the trailer inspite of being tied down etc. Let's keep hoping and praying for the best.

WHO CARES ABOUT YOUR TIME SHARE OR CONDO AT "WHEREVER"? I HAVE A 70 YEAR OLD FATHER LIVING THERE AND GOING THROUGH THIS BY HIMSELF AND I LOST PHONE CONTACT WITH HIM AT 6:00AM ON THE 3RD. FINDING PEOPLE ON LINE THAT CAN MAKE A LOCAL CALL AND CHECK ON HIM IS MY GOAL. THAT IS DIFFICULT TO DO WITH ALL OF THE WHINING ABOUT "MY PROPERTY" AND PLEASE E-MAIL PHOTOS OF THE DAMAGE TO ME.... He said that everything looks like a big mess. They've been pounded for more than 24 hrs. Rainfall was severe. He will take a ride around now, check on the neighbours etc. His friend came up to see him. He lives on the golf course so the roads must be usable. He will call me back in about an hour. sept.4, 12pm news from TC
Hank called again, unfortunately he only got my answering machine and left a message. He's been out and about, lots of flooding, much more debris and mess than they expected. If I understood him right, it wasn't possible to get to his parent's house which is at the end of Windward, seems to be blocked. Boats sank and broke lose. So far he hasn't heard of anyone being hurt, which is more important than anything else.
I will not be able to answer all of your questions, but will try to pass on any info I can get from him. It won't be possible for him to check on every house or villa, but I'm sure he'll give us "general area" infos whenever he gets around to it. Please be patient

here i am again.hank has seen barbara, sinclair, lee, ossie and many others on the road, as far as he knows, nobody has been hurt. Bahama Beach Club seems OK, Atlantis seems OK some shingles off in places, all boats there still floating (also yours ray). The road on Windward is flooded that's why it wasn't possible to drive out, not because of trees. Jeff's house across the brigantine canal is a wreck, roof off completely (hank thinks this might have been caused by a tornado because all the other houses around seem fine). Jeff has been informed. Hank will continue to check things out and keep in touch with me. hope this will be setting some peoples mind at ease. i know how hard it is not to be able to communicate....

the seawater didn't seem to have been the problem with this storm at least not on the canal/marina. it was more the rain and constant wind. so i think you shouldn't have a flooding problem on the first floor at leasr not from the sea water. If your roof held up, you should be OK

I'm more than glad to be of some help to all of you tc lovers! The water came over the sea wall but only approx.3 feet onto the lawn. So like I said before, this shouldn't be a problem. Hank told me that we had rain coming into the bedroom through our shutters...

to answer those family and friends who have asked me today...NO i am not "sobeflyer". HE is my brother. while i agree with his ideas of not to worry about property until family/friends are accounted for... let's not forget that this storm is still hitting abaco at 5:30 pm on saturday night... check the latest radar and see what our family/friends are still dealing with and no power/water/phone. i do wish he (sobeflyer) was a little more in the spirit of the coconut telegraph (no yelling and pointing fingers) in that some people just want information and may not be thinking (or have) a family member that is unaccounted for on our side of the pond. all i want to know is that my dad is alright. we rebuilt our homes after floyd and i know how to do it again if i have to but my family is not replaceable. lets just hope and pray with the little information we can get that none of it is about someone being hurt. before we know it the phones will be back, airplanes will be flying in and all your questions will be answered. until then lets pray for the safety of those on the island.

Just got off the phone with TC contact (IRIDIUM phones do not work under cloud cover)-

They need ASAP-
1. Water
2. Chain saws
3. Generators
4. Electrical cable (e.g. 10-3 etc) with male and female connectors to hook the
generators up.

They are hoping the airport will be open tomorrow-this not to say that it is not useable. They are still experiencing high winds.

There is significant damage to properties and vessels.

Dear Mendy,
I am an Atlantis owner and read in your message "that all units are badly damaged" Are you referring to the roofs (shingles?) or any other visible damage to the Condos? Is there anything we can do quickly? Thank you for your wonderful help, apreciate your answer, please.

This is a damage assessment from the TCPOA board and Neil Tobin.

Though i'd post it here as well.

2nd letter from Neil

I got a phone call on a sat phone about an hour ago advising me that our house on windward had some minor damage to the shingles but that the property was other wise in tack. There still were no phones or power but I got the same comments on the wind and water. It would appear at this time that Treasure did not get extensive damage.

3rd. letter from Neil

First let me make the disclaimer on the accuracy of this email.
I just received a sat phone call updating things and it is different to the one on got yesterday. This being said here is what i have. First I am told there are no reported injuries, the majority of the damage to the island was wind. The roads are flooded simply because of the volume of rain that fell.
there is still no phones of power. There is apparently significant damage to Atlantis but Mariners Cove and Royal palm are in good shape.
i don't know about the homes of the beach but our house on windward suffered wind damage with the hurricane shutters being torn off our master bed room but apparently the doors held (Great doors Mr.. Young).
All other hurricane shutters held some shingle damage but the sky lights are in tack. Some of the fascia was torn off and water was driven into the house this way with some ceiling damage but they tell me not severe.
the sea wall had no damage. The report is not the best but all in all nothing like Floyd. As i get more information i will let you know.
Jo-Ann and I are going to try and get in this Friday coming.
Regards
Neil G. Tobin

I have been going to TC all of my life and if people have concerns about their homes that is totally appropriate and I do not appreciate others telling those who are concerned not to be. Our homes there are our loved ones. I personally have put my heart and sole into mine. This by the way did not stop me from being in TC after Floyd and bringing down plane loads of supplies and helping out loved ones. This is a time for people to respect others and not to tell us what we can and cannot worry about. Thank you to Hanks wife for all of the info!!

Satt Phone call at 4:30 pm
Hank just called me and I will try to repeat what he said as good as I can. Tried to ask him as many questions as I remembered...
Ivan has been seen driving around
Damage is more extensive than he thought at first all due to wind and rain
Like mentioned above Atlantis is in pretty bad shape. Hank saw ceilings which had come down
Mariners Cove looks alright, one person has already taking off shutters, living there again
He can't drive by the formar Rayner's house because of flood. You have to go around German Town and the back roads to continue onto Windward
One boat sank in the marina, its yellow and he thinks he remembers a name like Donna and Faye(?) on it
The boat next to Jim Hooper (belongs to Canadian folks so he's been told, no name though) has damage, all other boats in the marina SEEM ok
He took a ride to Cooper's Town and was in shock of the state of some houses there. NO injuries or fatalities!!
He has been told that the power is back on in the houses on the golf course, nowhere else yet, but they are working hard at it
He heard a plane flying over today already and believes it landed at the airport
Wind still approx, 20 knots, overcasted and raining off and on
They are concerned because they haven't heard from Freeport and some of the other islands yet
Hank said that some big trees on the golf course which survived Floyd came down in this one, which shows how damaging the length of this hurricane was
When I asked what people should bring he said that most likely generators might be needed for a while, especially in certain areas, no really big demand for chainsaws and I guess everything else in the line of groceries, water etc (sorry, but I'm not a hurricane specialist, I'm sure you all know more about these things than I)
He will call me again tomorrow and I will let you know any news I get than
Some folks asked me for his telephone number, but I can't call him myself because he has to stand outside to have a reception. So we have to wait until he gets back to us
I will try to get TC as soon as I can because cleaning up help and support seems to be needed, hoping that the next storm "Ivan" will spare us.
I'm signing off now....Good night to you all

Based on a brief sat phone call from one of their friends to my brother, Mike and Elaine are fine; their house sustained water damage. kuf,
You obviously misread my early post. When I asked folks to not clog the board with requests about property, the storm was still full force at that moment. I have no problem with folks asking about property AFTER we know everyone is alright. Think of this analogy... Your mother's apartment building is burning. As you arrive, the fire department is working on the fire. There is a large group of people standing around the fire chief asking about the condition of their apartments (property) and you are having trouble trying to get through the crowd to make sure your mother is accounted for. Tell me you wouldn't feel this would be wrong. Look at the date and time of my post.

Hello Everyone

I have to say I am sorry I was given some bad information on the airports. I did see planes flying over yesterday and 2 people here told me that Marsh was open. In fact the person who first told me was the sister in law of the man that flew the plane that went over. She confirmed through another source for me that the airport was open. My husband is on his way to Marsh Harbor right now to get the real scoop and I’ll report back.. Again I am sorry for the misinformation.

But I just read this on the board

TC airport is operating

We're in the Atlanta area and looking to Hitch Hike with anyone who may be flying to TC from the Southeast. I called Continental and they have flight out of Miami at 1:15 today. Still waiting any word on how the beachfront of GTC is before we come down. We'd be happy to split charter- please email me.

Thanks, Brad Barrett

We have a home for 33 years on windward beach toward the point (next to Bill Hertz's old house, now the Bracey's). So glad we heard Bill is in Florida and safe!! Does anybody know if the Bracey's were in TC, or overseas as they often are at this time of the year.

We own one of the homes that was totally destroyed during Floyd, and we had to rebuild from the bottom up. We have heard conflicting reports about the extent of damage the houses on windward beach sustained. If there is a current report from anyone as to how much obvious damage resulted from Frances down toward the point, we would be very grateful to hear it. We are trying to figure out how soon we should get down there to help out. Will we just be in the way? Or can we actually be of some assistance?

Any more detailed information about Treasure Cay would be of great help to us.

Could the local newspaper (The Abaconian) and (The Abaco Journal) as well as the local Gov. reps, cordinate and institute local reporters to report for each Abaco community? Right now we are just thankful for native drums....
This was the same during Hurricane flloyd when we depended on Ham Radio operators for any info, thankfully...
Ivan may be chasing Frances? The weather channel or cnn, zns bahamas doesn't help when your concerned with a local area and people on Abaco and no form of tecnological communication to mainstream/Gov. etc..

Should each reporter or local gov official have a Sat phone, even if their info is received by vhf from each community area. Any improved communication would help both directions. What is a better way?

No apparent damage to shingles on all buildings.

Solar panels on the office building are off.

[Has anyone been through the Beach Villas? Has anyone seen David Sands?
If anyone has information specifically on villas #529, #563, #665 & #571 we would appreciate your feedback. Glad it sounds as if there are no injuries other than severly frayed nerves. Bless everyone helping pass on info.
Thanks, Michele

Does anyone know how Mango House (on the leeward beach side) at the corner of Treasure Cay Road and Windward Rd is? It belongs to Alex and Helen von Svoboda (used to be Bill Hertz' old house) and is beside the Lister's. It's one of the older homes and it had some damage last time from Floyd so we're concerned. Haven't heard about any of the houses in that area so any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

I am trying to get in topuch with Bill and Margaret Carey, they are family, and nobody has been able to get in touch with them yet, Bill had the Canvas Shop by Treasure Cay Marina, last we had heard they were leaving their home and going to a clinic. We had heard that one clinic had been heavily damaged. If anybody finds out any thing, you can post a message or email me at dockbill2@aol.com thanks

Zack - Dave From Banyan Beach's Friend...

Hi Zack and Dave,
thanks so much for your offer! We own a house at Brigantine Beach, the one at the very end of Brigantine road, the first on the right hand side to the old hotel, facing the ocean. If there is any possibility to let us know about it? We are in Germany and have no chance to come and help all of you, but we are with you with our prayers.
Thanks so much for your help!!

Hello everybody, since we are most concerned about the impacts of Frances to the people and our property near the point at windward beach road - e&b«s sunrise - we would appreciate news about the situation out there. Could anybody give us some information about Mrs. Uta Rolle and her family in Cooperstown. If somebody meets her please be so kind to tell her she should try to reach Egon and Beate as soon as possible. I really admire this board and the spirit of it«s users. A special thanks to ulitong: ziemlich gut Andrea, GrŸ§e an Hank.

We own 2311 at Royal Palm. Our caretaker just called from our unit(!) to tell us that it is in good shape. Some water intrusion around window frames and doors, but not more than could be mopped up. She said that the roofs on our building are intact, but that there apparently has been some damage to the RP buildings adjacent the office. She also has heard that Atlantis suffered quite a bit of damage. Our yards are littered with their shingles. Why our phone works but others do not is a mystery, but welcome news.

My father just got off the phone with someone who lives in Treasure cay. He went by our house (the big lavendar house being built on Spanish Close Circle) and said that it had very little damage, a window broke in the garage. He also went by other houses in that area (near lister's house, the point, the yellow house etc.) all seem to be ok, very little damage. a shutter blown off here or there, but he couldn't see anything severe. Hope this brings some comfort and peace of mind.

My dad just got off the phone with his friend who is in Treasure cay.

Mr. J Robins house on the point is ok, no damage

There seems to be no ocean water damage to any of the houses on the point or leeward. Possible that there is some rain water damage but that is hard to determine since you can't tell that from the outside. But there is no major visible damage to those houses in that area.

365 numbers are work but cell phones are not. Treasure cay is without power, however there are areas off the main road that do have power, no idea when power is comming back.

Just got off the phone with David Sands, Mgr of BVOA. Bottom line is that the Treasure Cay Villas generally came thru with minor surface damage -- shingles, shutters, vents, etc. But -- David said the damage to flora and fauna was much worse than Floyd. Serious beach erosion, sand blown all the way to the main road, lots of trees down, in short a "war zone". Power, telephone, water still off or spotty. There is an enormous clean up task ahead. He generally was very positive about the villas.

I just received a message from my dad in Treasure Cay. He flew into Treasure Cay and was able to drive from airport to Windward beach. Some trees down but not as bad as Floyd was. He reports minimal damage to houses at the point. Maybe some singles missing. However if you have too many shingles missing you could have water damage inside that he can't see. Windward beach houses looked fine. No surge damage in houses. Mostly shingles missing. Most garages on Windward were flooded from rain water as was his garage at SeaClusion.

I don't have a way to contact him. But he wanted me to forward information for the following owners we didnt have contact numbers for:

Trident house at point: Only shingles missing
Seaductress: nick and Sue:shingle damage and dock damage
Jane Shore toward end of windward beach: House OK

Hey Karen,
Our friends flew in to Treasure today, said things don't look so bad. Our Friends Lynn and Chase stayed at your beach villa and Harriet's villa last easter. She went by there said it looks perfect from the outside, however can't see in, compleatly boarded up. Harriets, the same with 2 inches of sand on porch. Lynn and Chase have a working sat phone. Any questions you can e mail cynthia@altairtravel.com. That's good news !!

Hi Andrea,
It's Karen and I am in constant contact with Uli. She desperately needs to get some communication with Ivan, can you please try and arrange that via Hanks phone. Because we, the beach villa owners are completely in the dark. Absolutely no info on the condition of our villas amd Uli is in a place where she can bring down supplies and so can I, but we need to know the status. Uli would like to help you make a reservation from Miami to TC if you need her to do so, just respond to this message amd I will let her know or you can E-mail Uli or me at KUF921@aol.com. Give Hank, Ivan, Florence etc etc our love and let everyone know we are able and willing to help as soon as we are able to get communications up and going.

Lynn just called on the sat phone, she would be happy to check out some specific homes for anyone interrested. She recommends bringing lot of HEAVY DUTY Garbage Bags for cleaning up debris, they have already gone through 60 bags. Lots of people out working and cleaning up. Power lines down all over TC Blvd and Windward Beach rd. Spinnaker was open last night. Most homes around golf course have power and water, and so does the TCB Hotel. Most homes with electric have phones, still no cell phones. If you want Lynn to check something you can e mail cynthia@altairtravel.com

It is me again, Emily karolyi. Call Calypso Air Charters. Just search for Calypso air online and there is an 800 number. I know they have had two flights to Abaco today....the first one landed in an uncertain location and the second one left around noon or so and landed (according to Calypso) in Marsh Harbour. You need to get to the terminal (not at main Lauderdale airport). Also try Yellow Air tAXI.

Should visitors postpone their trips for a couple of weeks so the residents can concentrate on getting things in order? When will it be known whether it is safe for visitors to rent boats and cruise around?

I think it would be helpful so we would know whether to make arrangements and come when it would be beneficial for all. For example, we are to come Sept. 25th. Should we wait for a month or two?

I know it will be different for each island, so maybe this should be posted in the general area, or to each island's area.

Many thanks and our thoughts are with you.

I flew into TC yesterday afternoon on Bahamasair via Miami. The airport in MH is still closed for commercial airlines. The phones are back on, even the cell phones are working again. Read on the board that some people who had asked me to get info on their property have already gotten it, so I won"t be calling again. Still no power and water, in some areas it looks like it might be quite a while (e.g. windward beach, brigantine, atlantis) What"s really needed are generators and electrical cords.

I reached my party via cell. I can only assume the cell phone is not charged due to lack of power or it is turned off assuming there is no service. I have spoken to my party on two different occasions and have been able to get through to others via the regular phone line.

We talked to Lucy Symonette last night - their house was destroyed and they are currently in a shelter. She said damage to Ocean Villas was minimal - #908 had ceiling damage, but ours (901) had only minimal leaking. Lots of trees down and shingles blown off everywhere but she said it wasn't as bad as Floyd.
