10:15 AM. Just made phone contact with MOW. Highest gusts recorded in area by 8AM were ~75 but gusts well in excess of that have since been experienced. Coconuts long gone from trees. Leaves are really starting to be stripped off trees and some broken branches observed.
Barometer Bob local on VHF but hampered by lack of internet access.

I am in Orlando and would like to hear any info on anything and anyone in Man O War. For those of you that knew the late Capt Lambert Sands he was my grandfather and I am also a Albury from my mother's side so I would love any info so I can pass on to the family here in the states. Also if you all here from any other family on any of the other islands please share. Thanks

Hello -

I spoke with Jay Sands of MOW (and Waterways Boat Rentals) at 9:55am. He and his extended family were all fine at the time staying inside. I have a lot of confidence in the folks at MOW. They're long hertiage prepares them for the worse and they are sensible enough to avoid danger.

I will report more as I hear it.

I would like to know that the Pleydell-Bouverie family (James, Ann and Jeremy) are safe (I'm writing from London). If you speak with them, send them my love. Janie xx

Thank you. Is there a threat of surge damage to MOW?

My boyfriend is on Dickies' Cay with only radio contact. His name is Guy at "Aynya House". He has been holed up since 3am Thurs. This thing lasted longer than expected and not sure if the radio could last longer than 24 hours. Any knowledge for a layman would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again, Jane

THank you, moderator. Am inquiring abt Cliff and Ruth Wells across from MOW Marina, with several boats hopefully not on the hard. I beleive the Alburys know them well - built boats & houses for them, etc. Their house was in view from the old MOW Marina webcam. Thank you very much ... will pass any info to the extended family.

Initial report on MOW via sat. phone: Severe beach erosion on ocean side. Some palm trees down. No reports of damaged buildings or injuries at this point.

Marsh Harbour: Apparently the roof on a government building collapsed- not known which one.

General consensus is that this was more damaging than Floyd, even though wind speeds were much lower, due to the length of time the storm sat on top of Abaco and the amount of rain.

Had a phone call late last night from Duncans. They had talked to Margot Lee who had been called by Scott Weathorford. He said there was no loss of life on Man O War. Also said there was severe tree damage. That was it...will hope for more info today. ( Hi Marie, It's Kathy. Talk to you soon!)

It's a great relief to hear that eveyone is apparently OK on MOW, we've been watching from Connecticut for the past few days on TV and all over the net. Best of Luck to Jay and Samantha and everyone on MOW, if there's anything we can do to be of assistance from up here please let us know, we had success getting supplies down after Floyd, we'll continue to watch the boards.

Hello All -

I just received a very brief phone call from a Ham Operator. I had no time to ask further questions. He reported that Guy and home and boat were all fine at Dickies' Cay. I assume many of you will receive similar calls as well so that you can be re-assured (and relieved) just as I have. I'm sure we all want more details but it sounds as if we will have to remain patient with the confort that at least our loved ones are safe.

Thank you all for your help in connecting Guy and I.

My thoughts remain for the rest of the wonderful folks of MOW, the Abacos, Grand Bahama and now the Florida residents.

Hi -

The message board for MOW has been quiet. I assume most, if not all communications (even wireless email or satellite phones) are still not working? Is there any news when Marsh Harbour Airport will re-open and folks will be able to fly in and out?

Thanks for any info,

Jane "Addie" Ramsay

Check the Marsh Harbour thread. There was a posting yesterday from Tami on Guana Cay that said airport would open today for charters and ferry also is to begin service today.

Hello Everyone

I have to say I am sorry I was given some bad information on the airports. I did see planes flying over yesterday and 2 people here told me that Marsh was open. In fact the person who first told me was the sister in law of the man that flew the plane that went over. She confirmed through another source for me that the airport was open. My husband is on his way to Marsh Harbor right now to get the real scoop and I’ll report back.. Again I am sorry for the misinformation.

But I just read this on the board

TC airport is operating

We're in the Atlanta area and looking to Hitch Hike with anyone who may be flying to TC from the Southeast. I called Continental and they have flight out of Miami at 1:15 today. Still waiting any word on how the beachfront of GTC is before we come down. We'd be happy to split charter- please email me.

Thanks, Brad Barrett

We just got a cell phone call from Andy Albury. Everyone on Man O War is okay. Damage is not too bad. Alot of tree damage. They do not expect to have power for maybe 2 weeks.

Just spoke with my parents via cell phone. Damage for the most part is limited to trees, landscape, shingles on houses. The beach side is completely different - the sand beach has shift around quite abit.

Houses down near the narrows are fine - no structural damage. Just alot of tree and debris cleanup. There are a few boats that have washed up on Dickey's Cay, and a couple on the small island across from the Johnny Bell's old dock - Now the bouveries(sp?)

Dad actually had his boat on a lift tied securely, and it made it.

Wind gusts were estimated at 120 knots for a considerable period.

There is no power, and wont be for a while but generators are working fine.

Marsh Harbor's runway is still covered by water over half its length.
I spoke with Continental Airlines just a minute ago, and they said the 2:45pm flight tommorrow is still scheduled to run to West Palm.

I will update as I know more.

Should anyone be heading to MOW, rope and line to re-secure boats would be helpful. Most have been tattered. Specifically, the Wells' on Dickie's Cay report theirs probably cannot withstand another storm.
Some bottled water would probably help as well. Thanks, Jane "Addie" Ramsay

Remember after Floyd?

The local people who live on the islands asked that everyone please refrain from jumping on the first planes to check out their vacation homes and/or boats. They wanted time to assess the damage and develop a plan before being invaded by vacation home and/or boat owners.

The islands are "their homes", not ours. Even though we may own a vacation home or a boat there, we are always their guests.

The fear was that if everyone showed up to check out the damage, there might not be enough water, food, fuel, etc. to go around, especially with the electricity being off for an extended period of time.

A friend had a call from Darvin Sands in MOW this morning and he said that everyone was OK. Many boats broke away from their mooring and were gone. Our 30 ft TUCUXI suffered a demasting and hatches blown off, but was still floating as of this morning. He also said that the winds were above 175 mph at MOW. Any more posting will be appreciated. Concerned in Atlanta, Ga.

Hey Jerry & Leslie from George & Jan Todd off the (hopefully floating) Sailboat Oh-Kay in M-O-W.

You must be in the states - have you talked to anyone on MOW yet? If you have any news, would greatly appreciate an update. Don't know whether or not to rent a plane to "salvage" the Oh-Kay.

If anyone has any word about homes on the southeast harbor, I'd sure appreciate a post.

Someone (probably Edie Weatherford) attempted to phone me yesterday but the message was so garbled all I heard was static.

Anyway, my parents (Peg & Ken Herring) and I are looking for information on Seascape & the Snuggery, between Ricky Lee's and Betty's Acre (the McMath's) and if anyone has an update please let us know.

Thanks everyone.

does anyone have any info on the gentleman who posted on the "temporary board" before Frances hit stating that he had just taken aerial photos of the islands and was going to do same after Frances.

These aerials were most helpful in locating boats after Floyd - that is how we found our still floating.

Just spoke to Darvin, phones are working.

Gitzi held her mooring. The mooring lines were cut but we used the anchor chain to secure to the block as well, this saved her.

"Texas" I do believe "oh kay" broke her mooring and ended up in mangroves, she has been moved back to her mooring, as for damage I do not know.

my e mail is penderel@hotmail.com or penderel@beadland.com if any one needs info from me. We will be going to MOW sometime before the 20th.

Thanks,
Graham

Have received 2 conflicting reports on status of "Oh-Kay" sailboat in MOW harbour - and still unable to get through on phone. She was/is on a mooring in the main harbour north of the fuel dock. She is 36' Island Trader (Taiwaneese looking), stainless steel mast, name carved in teak across her stearn-(difficult to read).

Has anyone talked to Andy Albury? He looks after our boat "Oh-Kay" - or - Keith or Blake at Edwin's Boat Yard? They repair her . . . when needed.

They all know the boat well and could tell anyone her status. We don't want to make a trip and overload the Island with extra people at this time unless its really necessary.

Thanks for any info.

Lorry Malm must have arrived at Marsh Harbour today, as he has not called home. He will be at our house just north of the narrows. I know he is looking for Ted Dowty if Ted is still on the island. Lorry will be there for a spell cleaning up and getting ready for a possible visit by Ivan.
He will look at the houses at the north end, especially Hudson's and will report if he can call out.

Finally heard from Phil Andrews. He was able to call from the house line so the phones are working at least periodically. Couldn't talk too long but he will try to get me a longer report later this morning.

Houses and boats fared very well. He is going to inquire about specific boats. If you haven't heard about yours, let me know and I'll have him get the information from you. He only saw one in the water when he arrived by ferry. None in the mangroves, none up on the rocks. Of course the boatyard is very busy doing what they need to. This is very different than Floyd though when boats were still submerged or in the mangroves for quite some time. As a boat owner, I'd be optimistic.

In general, ocean side houses will need to be repainted and sand removed off of the decks. Not bad for such a long blasting. There are a few cases where parts of roofs have come off but these are few and far between.

The beach (between condos and narrows) is "gone". Significantly more severe than Floyd. Much of the sand is on decks, in yards and much moved to the narrows where you can walk out to the rocks at low tide!

The most damage is to the yards. The extent is at least as bad as Floyd. Lots of trees down and a huge mess to clean up.

The bottom line is that if you still don't know about your property, you should soon as we can now communicate by phone (at least some of the time). It does look like we fared pretty well.

Glad to hear Phil made it and is making the rounds with pen and paper. If and when he finds out anything about the sailboat Oh-Kay, just need to know if they think there is damage, and is the rig secure, especially if she did in fact end up in the mangroves. Also, is there anything specific "anyone" on the island needs if we have to make a trip for repairs. Would be coming by private plane and could bring needed "stuff" if customs will allow. Haven't heard much about customs thus far and bringing in tools and material for repairs.

Standing by in Texas.

Only two boats in the harbor were seriously damaged. 2 boats were dis-masted. The owners have been contacted. Most boats (~70%) sustained MINOR damage (typically canvas issues or scratches in the coat). All are being taken care of and the owners are getting called, if needed. So, if you haven't heard anything, there probably isn't any reason to head out to MOW at this time. No news is good news.

Homeowners should probably make sure that their houses get aired out. Although seemingly undamaged from the outside, some have some water accumulation inside.

BEC was on the island yesterday and today. No power yet but this is a good sign.

Phone service spotty but improving. Calls out are easier than calls in. Cell phones work now.

No internet on MOW yet

Hi Nancy,

It is Sue Knoepfle Balk responding to your encouraging message that Lorry is trying to get to your house on MOW. We hope he finds it in good condition and that there is little repair needed. If he is checking on Christensen's house, perhaps it would be possible for him to see if our roof at Long Look is intact. I know the problem will be the debris everywhere, which makes access difficult. My brother Tom will be going down later in the month, however if there was an emergency, he would go earlier. My email address is suzannebalk@yahoo.com or telephone 630-858-0829.

Thanks, Sue
