....who knows....

I am looking for what one would call two words that would be similar and/or "companionistic" (is dat a word????). Because I KNOOOOOOOOW only the brightest and most intelligent folks go to Abaco, I am asking our family here.

For example, ANAGRAMS are words with the same letters but are different words = ie: "cats" and "cast"......but for words like "black and blue", huggs and kisses", "toast and jam"......What would these "types" of words be called? I'd like to find something on the internet that might have a list of these types of pairs.

Thanks for any ideas.

Try wordsmith.org and refdesk.com

That should do what I think you want to do.

We are about to get a Newfie (our third) this Saturday (she's 8 weeks old) and we'll be getting a male puppy next July. Soooooooooooooooo, we are trying to decide on names and the current "choice" is Huggs and Kisses. For those who know me, Huggs is a derivative from our last name.....the rest is, well as they say, his-to-ree. So, the "boss" plans on naming the newcomer this Saturday "Kisses" unless I can come up with a better "pair" name. Then, next summer, "Huggs" (the stud) will come "on board".

Don't get me wrong, the idea of calling our dogs "huggs and kisses" is OK, but I want to explore our options. So, unless I come up with a better "pair" of names . . . . . . . . . . Name options (in pairs) or how to search it on the internet are welcome - ASAP!!!!!!

...not a common breed but "vaguely" similar to a St Bernard in general size, etc. The Newfoundland named "Josh" ( all black) won Best in Show last year at one of the National Dog Shows. We had one for 12 years and had to put her down several weeks ago. :(

A Newfie dog should have a proud Newfie name!

Sticking with word pairs, my suggestion is Finnan Haddie.

This is a delicious fish meal, famous in Newfoundland, and is made from haddock.

Well, being a Newfoundlander myself, my suggestion would be:

Fish N' Brewis (a dish of cod and "hard" bread, which has been soaked til it's soft, and then it's all smothered with "scrunchions". Scrunchions are fried pork rinds).

So, another great name would be "Scrunchions".

Then, there is "Figgy Duff" - a dumpling with figs.

There is a wealth of information on the Internet for Newfoundland sayings and expressions. This is just one of them: http://www.io.com/~sjohn/sandra/nfsay.htm

Abacowilly How about "Bonnie and Clyde" for your dogs. There are alot of historical pairings out there. I just can't think of any more

"doublet"

From American Heritage Dictionary:" One of two words derived from the same source by different routes of transmission"

Also: " A pair of similar things"

Also: "One of a pair"

Above supplied by my better half Kathy who is a prime example that lives of English Majors haven't been a complete waste of time.

They are associated word pairs. Don't know if it will help in your search. Board members have already supplied some good ones and I'm sure they will continue to provide some great additions! My contribution: Gin and Tonic (G & T for short).

.....it's amazin' what one CAN'T think of with too much KG in the blood stream. We now have the puppy. Shes only 8 weeks old and about 18 pounds - 'kinda funny, in 8 months her head will be bigger than she is entirely today. I'll have to post a pic but she looks like a small black bear!

I am trying to "win" over "Huggs and Kisses" but the "real boss" is really hung on "Kisses" for the girl. I guess the male will be destined for "Huggs" next June. Such is life - after 34 years she's still the boss. Ain't life grand. The really cool thing is that lets me agree that we are going to Abaco in March for the Barefoot man....sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!! Pick yur battles...........
