Just got a cel phone call from Hope Town....don't know how, but it came through. Winds not too bad, raining sideways, no damage to our house, at least so far, limbs and shrubs down, which is to be expected, power and phones out, not any significant tree loss so far...[my comment, looking at weather maps....Hope Town may be catching the beginning of the storm....but maybe we are lucky and receiving only a glancing blow and that this is the worst.]

Unfortunately, according to the latest radar, the storm is just beginning to hit Hope Town. There's still plenty more to come. Good luck!

MOW Update Fri. 9/3/04 9:55am - Just got off the phone with the Sammy and Arlene Albury family of Man 'O War. They have been inside since 3am and intend to stay there until this evening or tomorrow morning. Advising others not to venture out at all due to high winds and flying branches. Winds are about 100mph. Phones have intermittant service so keep trying to get ahold of your friends and loved ones. They would love to hear from you.

Just received a call from Melinda and Keith (Rogers) of Dive Abaco. Their home is 6 mi north of Marsh Harbour. They have boarded up, have their 4 Potcakes, 6 rescued Potcake puppies, and 4 cats all inside with them and are getting a closet ready to climb into if the roof goes. I could hear the wind blowing while we were talking. Melinda said it is bringing back memories of Floyd. She asked me to give her an update on Frances as they were having trouble picking up info on their shortwave radio. I let her listen to The Weather Channel report from Abaco Beach Resort and told her I would call her with the 11:00 AM update from the Nat'l Hurricane Center. They know they will have these conditions at least until tonight. I told her from the IR satellite loop it appears they are now receiving the more intense winds and rain. She said the power went off last night at 0300 and came back on for a short time at 0600 so she was able to make tea and coffee. She called me on her land line and said the cell phone was also still operating. I hope I can get through to her at 1100. May all in this storm's path be safe.

Not an hour ago CNN,showed Marsh Harbour Airport, submerged under at least two feet of water. In fact,it was flooded as far as the eye could see. There are going to be flights tomorrow?

Everyone needs to remember that CNN has no news crew in the Bahamas. They are running tape delay feeds from various local Florida news crews that are camped in Nassau, Freeport, and Marsh Harbour.

CNN has spent the day showing footage of Nassau and calling it Abaco, showing Abaco and calling it Freeport, etc. These are filler pieces for them, their main story is in Florida.

So... don't be so quick to disparage someone's reports of supposed flights landing at Marsh Harbour. It may not be quite accurate, but it's not INACCURATE just because of something you saw on CNN.

BTW, I have unconfirmed reports that from Sat phone about the charter plane landing (from nassau) as well.

Hello Everyone

I have to say I am sorry I was given some bad information on the airports. I did see planes flying over yesterday and 2 people here told me that Marsh was open. In fact the person who first told me was the sister in law of the man that flew the plane that went over. She confirmed through another source for me that the airport was open. My husband is on his way to Marsh Harbor right now to get the real scoop and I’ll report back.. Again I am sorry for the misinformation. But I just read this on the board.

TC airport is operating

We're in the Atlanta area and looking to Hitch Hike with anyone who may be flying to TC from the Southeast. I called Continental and they have flight out of Miami at 1:15 today. Still waiting any word on how the beachfront of GTC is before we come down. We'd be happy to split charter- please email me.

Initial report as relayed to me via sat phone (I am in Virginia)

Sea Spray Resort and Marina are fine, all boats at dock are fine save one, the Sea Wench. Sea Spray will probably resume operations within the next few days.

I just spoke to my daughter in Marsh Harbour. She was in Hope Town yesterday. Says there's lots of sand everywhere -from 6" on up. Trees down along the dune back of the ballfield. Ballfield is like quicksand. The water damage is worse than Floyd because the storm stayed so long. Don and I had heard we lost our retaining wall, it wasn't true, some damage...The insurance adjustors are starting to come in today. Most coming thru Treasure Cay as MHH still has water on the runway.

Now that we know everyone is well and safe, do you any idea when/if there will be a home-by-home report? Many people are willing to come down and help but do not know what they will need to bring to help.

Most coming thru Treasure Cay as MHH still has water on the runway.Carrie, Carolyn and I are glad you and Don are okay and hope the damage is not too severe. (The Wetmores in NC )

Spoke w/Amy Bethel yesterday by sat ph. Everyone is fine, but tired. She stayed w/Willard & Suzanne and is now @ THVillas. All damage minor, cosmetic stuff, but everything is sandblasted and lots of sand everywhere. Water breached white sound between Mama's Marlin & Rocky Bay approx a 200'stretch. Abaco Inn sustained damage - heard that Sea Spray & HT Lodge are reopening in a couple of days. For individual property reports email www.hopetownfirerescue@hotmail.com All in all, sounds pretty darn good considering 30 hours of pounding... Ira & Tanny have quite a bit of water damage again unfortunately.

Just received 2 calls -- one a message from Truman Major telling us our boat is fine:) and then a more detailed phone report from Steve Snyder of Colorado who has a sailboat in Hope Town (and it is okay too). It was good to hear Truman's voice and Steve said Truman had no damage at his home.

Steve just returned with the TV crew that we saw reporting on The Weather Channel to Ft. Lauderdale today and had a list of folks to call for Truman. He said he stayed at the Abaco Beach Resort/Boat Harbour in MHH during the storm and was unable to call Hope Town from MHH but was able to go over to check out his boat. He said it appeared about 1/2 the boats in HT harbour sustained damage. As previously reported, 3 boats sank. Steve said a sailboat broke loose and clipped the Lighthouse Marina dock cracking its hull and is sunk there (as far as it can sink). Also, the diesel line at the marina was broken but is being repaired now. Four large boats (3 sailboats, 1 cat) are in the trees and rocks off the creek. He said the more severe home damage seems to be on the north point of Elbow Cay and one of the paving machines that was working on the roads was trashed by Frances. He remarked that the leaves were blown off the trees and everything was brown again like post-Floyd. He reported the overall damage does not appear very severe though, thank heavens. No damage is good damage, but the main thing is the folks are okay. The reporter who broke 2 ribs brought the piece of debris that hit her with her on the plane today.

Steve said there didn't appear to be much damage at Boat Harbour other than a couple of sailboats with holes in their hulls from banging against the docks--docks seemed okay. At the Conch Inn Marina he said a cat sank at the dock and their fence blew down. He said the boat motel had been moored in MH and was still floating proudly there. They had no water until yesterday at Abaco Beach Resort (I read the pumps were under water at the wellfield) and confirmed that the airport terminal was flooded -- you have to go to Cherokee Air at the airport to get to any planes.

I hope I didn't mess up any of Steve's reports -- I was taking notes as fast as I could!

Just received a phone call from my mom (Katy Cash). Phones in the settlement are getting long distance if they were already working. She has been able to use her phone locally to some places, but she cannot call to others. At 5:30 she got through to me (in VA) and at 6:00 I was able to get back in touch to her.
Thought you may want to know.

I spoke to Jane at length this afternoon. Some of you have heard from us already but I don't have everyones email so for those, here's what I know about your houses: East Point is ok, HarrisonHouse is fine, Skyward Beach-lots of water damage to both houses, Sundancer & Valentine's ok, Coral Point held up well; Hatchet House lost a bedroom shutter so water and sand got in, Benemi had a shutter blow open but everything seems ok inside and out, Leeway-the beach moved back under your house but not much sand inside, Sea Breeze looks like the day you left it; Habitat, North Star, Maxfield's, Silver Plume, all came through with little if no problems. Lofty Dunes and Doc's Hideaway have lots of sand in the yards-gardeners already cleaning up. Wynne-Rae lost some shutters but there are minimal problems-"looks good". Palmetto Crest will need a new roof but it held, Lime Tree lost shingles but seems dry inside. Nor'Easter 1 & 2 look good. The Krouts' have some damge inside-"everything fell out of the cupboards and broke". This is not to say that your houses are perfect-there's alot of painting to do, sand to shovel, shingles to replace etcetera but this is no where near the devastation of Floyd. Different damage but all doable. We've had worse and came through ok. You can email me at the ECP address.

Truman Major called us from his cell phone this afternoon and his home phone tonight. The phones are working, for some anyway! Truman and Lyn and boys are fine -- house is fine too.

Also, received a call from Keith and Melinda Rogers of Dive Abaco in Marsh Harbour. They are fine -- as are the shop, boat, house, many Potcakes, and cats. No power or phones at the house, and driving to town is tough because of the flooding. They called from a friend's phone and said they had no idea when their phones and electricity at the house would return. They have plugged their refrigerator into a neighbors generator so are managing. They were having trouble reaching her mother in Orlando and his sister in Toronto so I called for them.

Boy, is it good to hear their voices!!

Howard, I believe Maitland & Mercedes are in Freeport and they were to stay with Owen & Sharon Sweeting as before. We just got through to Gerald & Vickie in Hope Town and they tell us that Owen's house has approx 5' of water in it - we'll let you know if we hear anything else regarding their situation asap.

Best to All,
Mac & Amy

Truman has both phones up now -- keep on trying them. He called us twice yesterday afternoon from his cell phone and again last night from his home phone. Steve Schneider came back yesterday with a list from Truman of folks to call about their boats. Steve's number is (970) 729-1424 so you might try calling him if you can't get through to Truman.
