I was thinking of using a set of walkie talkies while on Abaco....US Freq's....
will this cause problems ? Will I be invited to stay in jail for a few nights if I use them ?

Everyone uses hand-held VHF marine radios to communicate and listen to the Cruisers net in the morning. This would be your best bet. Check out West Marine on the web.

Red Jacket has given you good advice, however, if you are uninterested in going the handheld VHF route there is no law against the walkie talkies.

A handheld VHF is great to communicate with others and of course to listen to the Net. We use the Radio Shack two way radios to stay in touch with members of our party. They work great and are unrestricted. Do remember that most of these radios only have a few channels and the possibility of someone listening in on your conversation exist.

My motorola FRS radios have a high and low channel, and some encrytion codes that can be entered. (which I have never used). (both radios need same code number, -it sounds like crosstalk/static to other FRS radios)
FRS are better way to communicat if you dont want everyone to listen in... (and are better for always on -standby.... so you dont have listen to everyone hailing on Ch 16.... like early in am...)
however, I would not go to abaco without my Hand held VHF... its really vital to communicate, specially these days...

Hi Mark,
We have used our walkie talkies every vacation in Guana. Without phones in the rental cottages it is a good way to communicate with other families in our party and the kids when they are roaming the island.

THE BETTER WAY WHEN IN ABACO AND USING VHF IS TO STAND BY ON CH. 68 WHICH ELIMINATES THE CH. 16 HAILING AND ALSO LEAVES IT FREE FOR COMMERCIAL AND BOATING INTERESTS. CH. 68 DOES GET ITS SHARE OF HAILING BUT MUCH LESS THAN 16.
