In the past 24 hours I have received four emails from "Bank One" asking me to update a password and supply credit card info. I have never had a relationship with Bank One.

I maintain two email addresses in relation to this message board, one at oii.net, and one at cocotels; messages to these two mailboxes get forwarded to me at home. The emails coming from Bank One are coming through these mailboxes.

I went to Bank One's web site; the graphics on the site look "similar but different" to the graphics in the emails I'm getting. Either Bank One is heavily recruiting--and I've never been solicited like this by a legit bank--or someone has highjacked some of their graphic presentation and is using it to email "anybody," getting email addresses from web boards like these.

Don't give out credit card info to any email-based solicitation!
Is this happening to anyone else?

Been getting them for years. They do it to ebay customers also asking for your password ect. They say if you don't respond in 2 days your account will be cancelled. Feel bad for the people who fall for this nonesence. There is one for SunTrust that just came out last week. Not good.

Ralph,

Your BankOne e-mails are a scam! They've had programs about these phonies over here in the States. They look like real web sites but are fakes designed to help thieves get access to your bank accounts. Glad you mentioned it on the board so everyone can be made aware of what's going on.

People are so naive. My dad paid over $10,000 for a variety of penny stocks to a stock broker OVER THE PHONE that he never met, just on verbal promises. Bragged about it saying, "I will leave you kids rich." I didn't mind, it was his money, but the thought he was being cheated ticked me off!

This sounds like just such a scam, but with an official-sounding imperative, "Do this or else," tone. I'm glad you posted. Perhaps people will be more wary. The difficulty comes when the "bank" is one you use. you don't tend to delete those types of email automatically as spam.

Bad guys like to cull email addresses from groups like this for targeted "phishing" attacks. For those of you on the board not familiar with the term "phishing", please take time to educate yourself. A great site for information on "phishing" is: http://www.antiphishing.org/

For information on the specific BankOne scam Dr Ralph was hit by, go to:

Remember, no company should be asking for your private info (CC number, SSN, etc) via email and never click on a link in an email asking you to verify your private info.

Safe surfing.

These are very common now a days. I get them form Citi Bank, Sun Trust and Capitol One. These scam artists are good. They tell you if you do not respond your account will be closed until you do. They are looking for all of your pertinent info so they can rob you blind.

Dr. Ralph, I just go one today from Sun Trust and one last week from Yahoo. All they want is as much information as they can get from you- earnings, credit cards, etc. Some people are getting hit badly. Wish they could get them off the internet. Linda in Va Bch
