Finally gonna meet Uncle Floyd Lowe!

I wrote a couple years ago on this forum and got much help finding my Uncle Floyd Lowe. Thanks!
My sister and I want to travel to visit this June (or so) and could use some advice as to the least expensive way to get there. Flying to Florida is pretty reasonable, but the flights from Fla to Marsh Harbor or Treasure Cay are higher than we expected. Perhaps someone on here knows of boats to catch a ride on or discounted airfare?
Also, a place to stay. I don't want to assume my uncle has room for us, so we would like to find a place to stay that isn't a luxury resort, with those resort prices. If a shack were available, we'd be happy with that! Are there places like B and B's or weekly rentals that aren't widely advertised?
One more thing....if our needs are simple, i.e. food and shelter, beach and family, so how much money would be necessary for spending on food, inexpensive entertainment etc. while we are there.
I feel a pull to visit, it's my mothers family and we have never met them or had any time to get a sense of that side of our family. Thanks so much for any advice!

Where is your uncle located. That will make a difference. There are lodging alternatives.

Abaco can be done on the cheap, once you get there. But you are beholden to the airlines that fly into it.

Grocery prices are a bit higher. Beer is expensive, rum is not. A cheeseburger will cost $10 at a beachside bar. The ferry from Marsh Harbour to Elbow or Guana Cay is $20 round trip.

If you are happy swimming, sunning, eating in most of the time, reading, doing a little shopping and having an occasional cocktail, figure $50 a day plus lodging. Of course you can easily spend twice that without blinking.

Have you tried searching on Orbitz for a flight? We got some great rates from San Diego all the way to Marsh Harbour for under $500.00. The trick is to search from your departure city all the way thru to your final destination. I also looked at flights to Florida and they were very cheap but the puddle jumper to MHH was almost twice as much!

Whatever you spend, you are going to have a GREAT time!

Maybe you would like to come the first weekend of May. We are having our 4th annual Island Roots Heritage Festival on GTC. A great time to reaquaint yourselves with lots of family all coming back to enjoy the festivities. Island music, old time foods, learn old time games, check your family tree, explore the island, enjoy the old photo displays and of course meet and renew your family ties with Mr. Floyd Lowe and the entire family!!
