Folks, I just read where US Airways will begin flying into George Town, Exuma beginning in Dec. This is a DIRECT flight from Charlotte to Georgetown on a 50-seat regional JET operated by PSA airlines........which is a wholly-owned subsiderary of USAirways. Flight time is 21/2 hrs and costs 251.00 r/t including all taxes.........my trick question? What does George Town have that Marsh Harbour doesn't? Ken

Just went and looked at the US Air website and under promotions - e savers, found that you can fly direct to Georgetown from several locations via Charlotte (Charlotte was $188 + tax = $250 each), Columbia, SC was $218 + tax, etc. Only dates I saw available were Dec. 18 to 25 and Jan 1 to 8 and Jan 8 to 15 for these low prices. All flights to/from Georgetown were shown as being a regional Jet (50 passenger). May have to look into lodging and have a late Christmas in the islands!!!

The runway is 8000 ft compared to Marsh Harbour 5000 ft. I'll bet the condition of the runway is better.

lose the financing commitments of "as many as 100" Embraer and Bombardier regional jets that were on order and which Bombardier and Embraer had agreed to sell on financing contracts, but they already have a number of such jets in operation, and their affiliated companies that formerly were feeder airlines to US Scare hubs are not in bankruptcy. Some of these jets were also being financed by third parties rather than the manufacturers. If the airline survives, they'll be able to get new financing. Just don't count on survival.

The runway is 8000 FT at George Town? Hmmmm,...when was it extended? I was there not long ago and it still was only 5000 FT long. It does make sense though. I don't think too many operators of regional jets would fly into a 5000 FT runway.

Flown into Marsh Harbour 6 times on charter, Exuma once. The runway in Exuma is in much better shape (pre hurricanes, I can not speak for after) -- wider, smoother, longer. And there are taxiways -- one does not have to turn and taxi back on the runway. However, Exuma does have the Four Seasons. Begets the questions which came first the chicken or the egg (or in travel the runway or the resort/tourists). Regardless, with a Four Seasons, many morepeople will travel to Exuma. However, we prefer Abaco!!
One pilot/traveler I have known for many years, who has flown his own turboprop to the Bahamas for 30+ years from the US told me "once they have scheduled comemrcial service of more than a 20 passenger plane, I move on to the next island. That island will soon "no longer be quaint".
