Hi all,

We are coming to Abaco (Hope Town) Nov 22-29. It appears to be very windy there right now. Is it too rough to boat right now with a rental?

We were there this past April and got only 2 boat days in seven, so we're hoping for better this time around.

Thanks,
John

John, today is the 10th, you arrive in twelve days; consider that the best supercomputers and models on the planet could not forecast the movement of Hurricane Jeanne more than 24-36 hours in advance.

You won't know if you'll be able to boat until you get to Abaco. This time of year, you could have two nasty days, followed by two great days, followed by two iffy days...

Go ahead and make arrangements to rent your boat, and with a little luck you'll get out on the water and have some great fun. ;)

Just as an example: We were there last weekend. Friday was picture perfect. The sea and ocean were flat as glass. Saturday, the ocean and sea were both impossible. Rainy, windy, and rough. Sunday, the sea of Abaco was flat as glass again. Ocean was doable, but not as flat as Friday. We've seen rougher seas in the middle of summer than we did on this past Friday and Sunday.

We always rent a boat during our stay and just cross our fingers. If we can't use the boat a few days, then that's OK and we have to just factor that in.

Ya just never know till you get there.

Keys captain is traveling to Abaco in search of windsurfing. Traveling with gear to GTC for 2 weeks of potential playtime.

Curious as to common wind strength, duration, and direction in December?

Also will be cruising on 27 foot Catalina Coquette singlehanded.

See u in abaco.

The "winds" will be very dependant on frontal activity. Strong fronts and gradients create strong winds, weak fronts and gradients allow quieter weather.

The prevailing winds in the winter are NE through SE, with the northern quadrant being more common. Strong fronts bring the typical SW to W to NW, and they can be pretty gusty. Strong high pressure can linger, and the wind can blow 20-30 knots from the N or NE for days. Be advised that this creates "rage" conditions which blocks the offshore passes facing N, NE, and E.

On the other hand, in December you may get some gorgeous days with light SE or variable wind. You just have to work with what Mother Nature gives you.
