Thanks to all who recommended the subject camera. I bought one and an underwater housing to bring to Elbow last June. Either the housing was defective or I did something wrong - regardless, while using it off the reef, sea water got in, shorted out the components, and rendered the camera useless. Long story short, even though the they expressly cite water damage as non-warranted, Canon sent me both a brand new camera and new housing - no questions asked. Pretty unusual in my experience. Thought I'd pass this on to other A620 owners.

Thanks Steve B for the camera report. We were one of many who posted info about the Cannon A620 and the underwater housing which we had already bought and waiting for our May trip to Abaco to put it to good use. We love it and did not have any trouble with it other than just learning how to use it underwater. I'm glad to know that Cannon stood behind their product regardless of the circumstances - makes for good customer relations and potential repeat sales.

By the way, I notice you are from Lorton - we have a place in Springfield, VA...hubby works in DC.

I use a 5700 Nikon - Dispite consumer reports magazine praise a couple years back it is A most user unfriendly camera and I want to make a change.

The underwater case you mention with your cannon has lots of appeal. But from the pictures of the camera I've looked at, and the specs I've read, I cant tell if the lens is threaded for use with a polarizing filter - a must in the Abacos.

Can you fill me in
Thanks

Sandy

You have to buy an adapter. Works great.

The a620 also has numerous automatic setting (i.e. underwater, bright sun, night shots, etc) that automatically adjust the settings for the circumstance. It can also be operated in full auto and full manual modes.

We took pictures in the bright sun on the beach, on the boat, etc. with it in the full auto mode and they turned out fine. In the housing with it in underwater mode the pictures were awesome too.

I haven't set aside the required hours to go through the extensive manual and read about all of the nuances of each setting. I'm sure the camera can do much more than I will ever need or ask of it.

I'm not in any way shape or form a professional photographer either. The easier to operate, the better for me!

we too purchased the canon and underwater housing, we love it!! I also could not sit and read the 150 page manual, but figured almost everything out on my own. nice to hear canon is on top of their game. Marianne
