Is it usually feasible to go swimming on Elbow Cay in December? I've looked at the weather for the month but wonder what one can usually expect. We plan to be in Hopetown from Dec. 21 to the 29th. Any suggestions on what clothing to bring? We've been there in May and November but never in December. Thanks

It can be sunny and in the 80's ,as it was last year, and it can be a blow, with highs in the low 70's ,as it was the year before! At night, it can be in the high 50's... Unless the sun is out and little wind, you probably won't be getting in the water for swimming. In any case, it is a beautiful time to be in Abaco.

Unless you live in the Northern Latitudes and think swimming with the Northern Pike and Wholeye, walleye Oh crap....I give up (I am sure NO ONE can spell that)
and swimming in 68 degree water sounds like Tahiti you could have your "Summer Days" in December !!!!!

In July here in San Diego, if the water is 70 degrees, we are lucky it's that warm.
Check out Baramoter Bob for averages.
All relative...

We've always travelled to Abaco in April, May, and early June. But last year we went from right after Thanksgiving until about Dec. 15th. We had some rainy, stormy days during one week. A windbreaker and umbrella were handy. In the evening I wore a light jacket several nights but most days were shorts and capri weather. I took along a pair of long pants but only wore them once. We weren't boating so the boaters out there might give you advice for on the water. We didn't think the water was warm enough for swimming. All we did was walk along the shoreline. Most of the time the weather was great. If I hadn't already booked our usual May trip I think my husband would have had me wait to return this winter. Gee, come to think of it. . . maybe I ought to book a winter trip now. Do you think that three trips to Abaco in thirteen months is too much?!?
My husband and I stayed on Green Turtle on December. We snorkeled. I wore a shortie wet suit. It was a little chilly for me, but I am cold natured. But my husband did not wear a wet suit and was fine. We were there for a long weekend in mid December. Needed a jacket or sweat shirt occasionally at night, especially riding in the golf cart.
Wore a a bathing suit during the day. I had a long sleeve t-shirt for when the wind would pick up. Wind was cool on the ocean side in a bathing suit but in the protected bays, I was very comfortable on the beach in my bathing suit.
The warmth of the day was dictated by the sun and clouds. Very warm when sunny, cool when there was cloud cover so I would take light layers.

i was there from december 27th to january 5th or something around then. I went snorkeling out to a few reefs around guana more than once. It was cold, but not unbearable. After about 20 minutes out there id usually be to cold and come in. there were quite a few other people out there as well. if i go this year i will probably bring a shorty wetsuit just so i can stay out a little longer and be more comfortable.

It can be really beautiful -- or breezy and cool. We've spent the last three Christmasses in the Bahamas - Nassau, Abaco, Cat Island. All three trips, we've had an assortment of weather.
Not a lot of rain, but the weather has ranged from quite warm and sunny to winds that whipped the sand on the beach into your face like sandpaper to nights that were quite chilly. I didn't swim on any of the trips - the water was a bit cool for me, but my fiance has gone scuba diving and/or snorkeling every trip - with a shorty wetsuit. The good news is... not a lot of bugs and much milder (less humid) weather than summertime.
All in all though, Christmas in the Bahamas is wonderful!
We like mid October, however it is the wettest season, but we got really lucky in 03, only rained once in 10 days there. We will be going back in October again in the future..

This is all ancient history. Glassball joined us today, and dug up a thread buried well over a year ago.
Check the weather links on the yellow sidebar, Glassball.
