Hello All,
Thinking of renting a house from Dec through Feb. Purpose Chillin' and surfing. Can anyone fill me in regarding conditions of surf on Five Mile Beach ( think thats the name) near nippers. Will there be ridable waves?
Thanks
Alfonse
PS.
Know of any reasonably priced beach houses?

The place to surf "in the area" is down on Elbow/Hopetown near the Abaco Inn.....Not on Guana.

They surf all the time on Guana, Blake Sands and several other GGC boys are a big part of the surf team in Abaco that went to Peru I believe to compete for National honors!

I never saw any waves on Guana when we visited. It was always so calm, like the sound. But on Elbow Cay, like mentioned above, down by Abaco Inn, we watched people surf awesome waves every day! 3-footers! Maybe bigger in the winter months. Do a search, there's a thread with pix.

Boy, I have!! Guana may not be quite as consistent as Elbow but they do get their waves.

Guana can get sick if you catch it right..In winter..Jan/Feb in can go off. Cold fronts and lows can make some pretty good surf. Elbow and garbonzos might be more consistant, but Up north on Guana is good fish waves most of thetime, and no one is out..Which is super cool...enjoy it..If you're more hardcore Eluthera might be more up your alley..A little more out to the east and consistant, and cheaper too..but either way you'll love a month there..

I have surfed Gauna many time scince 1972, when it breaks it can be great, rent a golf cart, we dock our boat at Orchid Bay marina, strap our boards to the top of a rental cart and head as far north as the road gets us, there is a nice reef break and if it just right its real good about 3/4 mile walk north to the rock wall. I have some pictures from this past January if you have an email address, I have tryed to post them with no luck on this site, to many bits. Elbow Cay is better and longer rides, but the best is a spot 2.5 miles north of Walkers Cay, the most northern of the islands. It can only be reached by boat. There is no land for miles and the reef break (during a ground swell) is unreal, you would think you were in the pacific. Most of the time we just anchor our sailboat and take the tender out to the break. email me for pictures.

Since you are lucky enough to stay for several months in Abaco have you considered staying a month on Elbow and the rest on Guana? Then you can easily check the surfing out in both spots.

...Cay with great breaks and swells! Let see....what was the name??? Oh yeah, Whale Cay Passage! Have seen some impressive water activity there, but not sure I would surf there...not intentionally anyway!;)

During the summer months the prevailing winds are from the east and southeast. Since Elbow Cay reef is on the east and southeast of Elbow, it makes sense that this would be a good surfing spot during the summer. The winter months have prevailing winds from the north and northeast. Since Guana reef faces this direction, I suppose that would make Guana preferable during those months......however......I have been wrong before.......Ken
