Hello to all from Charleston, SC!
We are new to the forum, and as such thought it proper to introduce ourselves instead of lurking in the shadows of threads...
Firepiper (Mike) and NurseChick (Susan) will be headed to Lubber's Cay for a two week stay (Aug-Sep). You can find us at Sea Level Cottages.
This will be Susan's first trip to the Bahamas. Mike spent a few years navigating between South Florida, Andros, the USVI and Puerto Rico while working for the US Coast Guard. These days he is a combat firefighter in Baghdad, Iraq (when not in Iraq he is a firefighter for the City of Charleston). Susan is nurse working for the Medical University of South Carolina (Heart and Vascular).
As you can imagine, we are both ready for a little rest and relaxation. We look forward to meeting as many of you as possible and would appreciate any advice you can offer a couple of "newbies" to Abaco!

Just wanted to say Thank You for your service.

Plan on renting a boat for at least one of the weeks.

Thank you for making our international travel possible. You will love Lubbers! It is VERY quiet. It is a great place to get re-acquainted with your spouse. Sea Level is a good choice as they provide the boat and you have a beach. Their docks looked great with chairs and a hammock on them. The only thing I would suggest you do that we didn't is take a cooler with food. We only took snack items and wished we had gone to the trouble to pack a cooler for those nights we came in early. On Lubbers, you really need only your bathing suit and a cover up. On our next trip, we are taking a back pack and a cooler! Make sure you give Dee a call and say hello to Salty! Have a great time!!

Thanks for the advice! We're truly looking forward to the trip. A cooler is a great idea, as is the boat(one of the reasons we selected Sea Level). With Salty on the beach, it will be as if we never left home. Beamer, our Black lab will have to stay and watch the house.

Climb the lighthouse at Hopetown 2 times. Once during the day and once at night. Awesome view. Have Fun!

We stayed at the Big House and at the Garden Cottage at Sea Level for many years. Austin and Amy are great hosts. They have a great set up and have much knowledge about the area (his Dad taught us how to clean conch). Have a great time. If you can make them some drinks and get them to sit on the dock with you, they have some great stories to tell!!

Yep, you will LOVE it there! We stayed 3 houses up from SeaLevel (Green Bananas) in March and had the best time. The cay is so small that one evening I was in the kitchen and looked west out the window and noticed the sky a gorgeous pink. I grabbed the camera and raced over to the other side of the island in time to get a great photo of the sunset! You'll definitely get your doggie fix on Lubbers with Salty and Bigfoot.

I agree with wregle, a cooler is a must. How else do you keep the Kaliks cold on the boat without one?

And don't miss the smoked fish dip at Cracker P's!

Have a great time and thanks for all the good work you both do!

Have you made travel arrangements yet? If not, be sure to start soon. Travel mid week is easier than weekends, have passports to ease entry back into the states, if taking cooler use something other than duct tape to close it since commercial carriers will search it and Bahamian Customs will want to look inside as well (generally only frozen foods are allowed so be aware of the rules), be aware of weight limits on charter operations, take plenty of sunscreen and bug repellent, enjoy the time and area - it's a great place to visit (and your sure to want to come back again and again).

Dodges guide to the Abaco's and explore, explore, explore! We've been going for well over 15 years now and it is well worth spending the money for fuel to see ALL of the Abaco's!

A walk through the woods to Cracker P's, Tahiti beach at sunset, the many isolated cays between Lubbers and Little Harbor, Pete's at Little Harbor, Hope Town and walk around, and the list goes on and on and on.........

Enjoy.
