View Full Version : Selling a sailboat

Recently I had open heart surgery and am still trying to regain my strength and stamina. Unfortunately, this means that I will have to have to set aside my passion for sailing the Sea of Abaco and put my Hunter 30 up for sale.

How does one go about selling a boat in the Abacos? Are their any yacht brokers around who will list my sailboat? Are "for sale" messages allowed on this board, or are they considered commercial postings? Would placing an ad in the Abaconian be worthwhile? Does the fact that my boat is Bahamian registered, with all import duties paid, make it more attractive to local buyers?

Any advice and guidance would be much appreciated.

you may have to un-document the boat if you sell to non-American buyer.
Bradford, in Freeport has a Broker.

If the boat is duty-paid in the Bahamas, I don't think Bahamian Customs care who owns the boat, local, foreign resident, second home owner or visitor who just keeps it in Bahamian waters. There is an annual registration fee that needs to be kept up to date, also.

If it was duty and sales tax was paid in the states, supported by appropriate documentation before it came to the Bahamas, I see no reason why it can't be purchased by a US resident and returned to US waters.

There are no yacht brokers here in the same sense as in the states. You could try advertising in the Abaconian, placing a color picture and description in store windows around town and at the post office. Word of mouth may work, too. Advertising, per se, is not seen on this board (see header "No Commercial Posting") but is done in a covert way, e.g., peoples signatures contain a link to their 'home-rental' web-site. And, in a kind of way, you have done it here.

Hope the heart keeps getting stronger and good luck with selling your boat.
