The 2nd week of august was our 6th visit to Hopetown. We "discovered" the Abacos in the late 80's, visited a few times, had 2 kids, moved to Florida, and returned august '03 and again august '04 - just a couple of weeks before "the big blows" . . . We know ya'all will come thru as you did after Floyd. "Abaco is NOT for sissies".
Anyway, this summer we brought our niece, Katy, from upstate New York, (my husband named her Katy Bahama from the moment arrived - the grin on her face was priceless) to join us for a week at Fran's Fancy (Hopetown Point) with us (her aunt & uncle and 2 teen cousins). She was doin' the happy dance when she saw the islands, the color of the water,the dock, (Dick, I understand it's gone, gazebo, hammock and all :( ), the house, and her room (we gave her the room with the view of the Sea . . . We had a glorious week of the usual boating, island hopping, lots of snorkeling (Mermaids) , Guana visits (Nippers, of course and my daughter Christy (11) and Katy had real hair braids done there on Sunday, Aug. 8th. We showed her and our two girls everything we'd seen over the years, too lenghty to mention.
Okay, so we also were celebrating her 18th birthday. We had a blast going to all the "usual places" as she was finally able to order a drink for herself. After all, there's nothing like an ice cold rum drink after boating etc. The amazing thing I noticed after reading all the many posts and viewing the photos over the past month is this:
EVERY PLACE KATY HAD A COCKTAIL, IS EITHER DESTROYED OR DAMAGED. Abaco Inn, Mangoes, Boat Harbor Marina, The "Edge", the "Lodge" (restaurant inside and especially the Reef Wreck, Sea Spray, etc.
We've been teasing her mercilessly that the Abaco's would never welcome her back -- that she was the cause of all the mayhem and destruction. NOT TRUE, OF COURSE, but we've had lots of laughs and she's such a GOOD SPORT.
I'm going to attach some photos of the "girls" (Katy, Molly & Christy) BEFORE the wind started to blow - that is the "SPIRIT" LIFTER . . . ( or is Katy the spirit lifter) cause I feel somewhat of a tug on my emotions to share the beauty just a few weeks before . . . Remember, if you build it, they will come. If you re-build it, they will come and drink rum . . .
