The moorings at Fowl Cay need help...the dive shops should, if possible, get together and find some way to maintain the moorings...sounds good but I don't think a lot of people dive in Abaco?....during our 3 week stay my wife and I dove 25 times ...some at Fowl and some at Sandy Cay...it seems there are less and less moorings...we ( dive operators and me ) fought for the mooring called "The Wall" during my dive I noticed a ring right next to the mooring we were all shooting for ...cut rope still attached...how much could it cost to run a new line and ball? Then there would be two moorings at "The Wall".

I think the better question would be, would the Bahamian government allow crusiers to replace these lost moorings? I believe you could replace the ball and rope for a little more than $70 if you played your cards right.

EDIT: Seems I miscalculated. A 24" mooring ball goes for $250 from BoatUS... Still, if the money could be raised, we could easily give back to replace the moorings lost.

I think Reef Relief helped put in and maintain the buoys in the Green Turtle area.

I just returned from Hope Town and last month I attended an event sponsered by the "Friends of the Environment". There was much discussion about a program in the works to make Fowl Cay a National sea park and part of the program would be maintaining and adding mooring balls. Like all projects, they need money.

I believe the real question is, "AS A TOURIST WILLING AND WANTING TO USE OUR BOUYS, ARE YOU WILLING TO PAY A SMALL FEE TO HELP KEEP UP THE BOUYS?"
Why do you just expect them to be there for you. You are diving from your boat or a rental boat, not helping the dive operator make any money! Okay you might buy air fills, but that pays BEC not us!
I know of at least two new bouys already pulled out at Guana Cay reefs! Who do you think is going to replace them, not you!
You should think about making a donotion to "FRIENDS OF THE ENVORIMENT" who help make this all happen, and who puts lots of time into trying to keep them in order.
Please do not look at the dive operator to pay for this!

I'm not looking for the dive operators to pay for anything...I thought a fee when you rent a tank....I would not mind contributing since I will use the mooring....we rent the tank and weights and pay for air fills....Hell no moorings to hook up to and the dive operators will suffer also because I won't go there to rent tanks, or buy air fills or a gift from their shop. A little touchy arn't we...must have hit on a true note

Hell don't put in any moorings so we all have to throw an anchor and ruin the coral then noone will have to worry about anybody going to Abaco to Scuba Dive

Abaco is not the only island that has Scuba diving and moorings....How do the other dive operators do it?
