View Full Version : Kelly family with property on Guana Cay
The Kelly's who own property by the school, asked me about the dune damage on the beach by their property. I deleted their e-mail address but do have some pictures for them. Hope they see these!!

Where is this stretch of beach in relation to High Rocks/The Pavillion?
Thanks.

Hi Pat,
Thank you so much for the photos. It looks like there was not much erosion. Is that what you saw? I was so sorry to see what happened to the Yellow House and wondered if there was damage to the beach and other dunes. Did the beach return to it's pre-Frances size? I understand the beach got 50 feet wider after Frances. Did you notice if the low area between the school and the beach flooded or held water for very long? I appreciate all of your kind assistance and look forward to returning the favor. Thank you, Grant
These pictures were taken right down from Nippers. In the second picture, the green area down the beach is Nippers dunes.

The first picture below is standing at the edge of the dune and looking down. There is quite a bit of the dune gone. You used to be able to walk right down onto the beach but now, you have to climb down.
The second picture is of your property and we saw where the water came up over the dunes and onto your property. Sidney says that during Northeaster's that he has seen water up to where the basketball post is at the school.

Thanks Pat,
That helps a lot. I hope I'm not too foolish to build on that lot. How long does it stay flooded? Does it drain as soon as it stops raining during a Northeaster?........that's a lot of rain to reach the basketball goal! At least it would fill everyone's cistern. I hope to make it down soon so I can see for myself. Sorry for all the questions, but thought you might know.

Ok, Sidney says with all the sand in that area, the water dries up quickly. If you own the property up to the dune then you did lose some land to the beach. But when you come again you can see for yourself as you said.
We have a rage going on again so who knows what the beach will look like after it calms down again. We went to High Rocks last night and the rocks are starting to disappear again. The beach is ever changing here, it amazes me!
Thanks Pat,

Hi Pat and Sidney,
Thanks for all the answers and help. I saw your very nice post on how everything is progressing on Guana. The island and the people are very resilient as we have witnessed since we first visited in 1997. I hope ya'll have a wonderful and well-deserved vacation. I certainly will stop by and say hi when I get there in November.
Take care,
Grant
