Does anyone have experience using XM satellite radio in the Abacos. XM radio claims that the US Coastal area is covered. Thank you

We have XM and love it. We've had it over two years and its so nice to be able to listen to what we want to listen to at anytime.

First folks asked if their Cellular would work in the Abacos. Then internet. Then WIFI. and now XM. Give me a break.

That's not what you go to the Abacos for. IS IT?

No, but if you LIVE in the Abacos, its nice to be able to listen to something besides Radio Abaco and if you don't own a tv like us, its nice to know what is happening in the world beyond Abaco.

What about the people who LIVE in the Abacos? Or those who spend months cruising? Don't they deserve to be able to listen to sat. radio? Or people who really enjoy listening to music. Some people are huge sports fans and want to get the scores, or hear the play-by-play. Some people love the huge selection of music. Some people need their news fix.

We take our iPod and the portable player to enjoy on the boat and at the house. Because we're enjoying technology does that make us enjoy the abacos any less? I think it enhances it, jlistening to our full library of Buffett songs on random play on the iPod. Just as XM would on the boat, or in the house.

As for the cell phones/blackberries, my SO is never really "off" work. With what he does, he has to be able to be reached and may have to leave at the drop of a hat. The blackberry stays on and is checked daily and his work is given a slew of contact phone numbers should something happen and we need to return. If we didn't do this, or weren't able to have access to this technology, we wouldn't be able to enjoy paradise at all. It is a small blip on the radar of what we do there.

I supplement my 9-5er that doesn't pay that well and get my "play money" by doing freelance writing and editing. Same thing: That's what's paying for me to play in the Abacos. I wake up, take the laptop to the crow's nest, enjoy a bailey's and coffee and listen to the cruiser's net - while checking my e-mail to see if I've picked up any projects for more rum money. And I'm quite happy typing away at the keyboard, in the sun (in theory) with a rum drink at my side while the SO fishes (it could save our relationship - I don't fish and drive him nuts if I'm crying over the poor thing flopping around in the boat).

In today's world, it's the best a lot of us can get. When I win the lottery and can afford to drop off the face of the earth for 7-10 days, I'll gladly do so. I don't think many people go to the Abacos to be glued to their cells, laptops, blackberries and whatnot. those people are more apt to pick an all-inclusive on grand bahama that's much easier to get to.

I should have addressed my remarks to the“The fly-in Vacationer”.

Of course local residents, long-term cruisers, businessmen / salesman and journalists are exempted from my factious remarks.

Now "The fly-in Vacationer" are being told how to enjoy the Abacos but those of the higher classes "long-term cruisers, businessmen / salesman and journalists " are free from these requirements. Who passes down these rules?

I "fly-in", am I allowed to bring CDs with my own music or is that just plain wrong?

It's far better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open ones mouth (keyboard?) and remove all doubt...

Rick, I never doubted you. We will miss you, Patty, Pammy, Katy, the aunts, the uncles, the boyfriends and many other guests of Hotel S/V Fais Do Do in Abaco this summer. Maybe 2007? M/V Island Fever and crew P.S. Don't forget your laptop and IPOD!

I've seen this sort of thing more than once in a thread. Here's my suggestion, and it's one I need to heed myself:

To the list of things you leave behind when coming to the Abacos, add "moralizing."

I think most would agree that "having other people tell you what to do" is one of the trappings of civilization they are happiest to get away from.

I agree. The man wanted an answer to his question not a lecture. Thread closed.
