If there is anyone on the island reading this...is there any way someone can get over to Suncrest villas to get a message to my mother, please????...
My family, Betty and Jay Odom and Sacha and Tim Borders are at the Suncrest Villas. I need to get a message to them right away. I have not heard from my family since before the storm and have not been able to contact them.
Need Message Delivered ASAP: John from Concrete and 3 others departing Daytona at 2:30 pm to arrive in Treasure Cay tomorrow.
(I would, of course, like to know they are all alive and well, but assuming that they are ... I need to let them know these guys are coming and they will need to be picked up at the airport and have a place to stay when they arrive!)
If unable to get this message directly to the Odoms. Please relay it, if possible, through: These are the numbers, I could find:
Brother Lowell Edgecombe- "Unca Lou" VHF Channel -06
Treasure Cay Taxi #26,
Work Phone-242-365-8661,
cell-359-6675, or
Stafford Symonette @ Full Gospel Church:
242-365-8879,
242-365-8097,
242-365-6087
Anyone who might be able to help, please respond. I don't want these guys flying out and not being able to get there or being stuck at the airport because no one knew they were coming. Thanks so much! --- Dawn
Just spoke to our parents in TC.
Sunny day. Humid and hot.
Apparently phones will be down for a long time, because they were told that the Batelco Tower was torn down by the wind.
Their phone seems to work from Royal Palm to Royal Palm, but it doesn't work (just rings) in immediate nearby areas in TC. Forget about elsewhere in Abaco.
Ocean Blvd:
Heidi: they went back on Ocean Blvd. It is still really flooded and difficult to get across. However, they saw your house from outside (they didn't get too close because of the dogs) and it looks OK. Only some slight roof damage (but they said they weren't sure whether it's damage from the hurricane or if it's something that was already there from before). They are trying to get in touch with Marc to learn if interior is damaged. As soon as they see/hear him they'll update us and we'll let you know.
Gianna: mom and dad saw Pete, at your home (he was the balcony/terrace), he's been unable to communicate with anyone due to the situation around that area. He's fine and apparently is trying to fly back home (to you) today. He said the garage is totally flooded.
Windward: still flooded (50cm of water), lots of trees down.
The point (Sunrise point): Carl's house looks perfect, just the beach in front is very reduced. Whereas the beach directly in front of the huge peach-colored house on the point is apparently huge now.
Lots of debris on roads, and highway.
Has anyone seen or heard from Janet Redfern. She was staying at Betsy Bracey's during the storm. We would like to be assured she is safe and sound. Also Mark Carroll and Francoise. Any details at all about the houses from Windward Beach road out to the point on Windward Beach? Sounds like the surge hit the big beach harder than windward beach. We are to the left of Bracey's house (Bill Hertz's old house on windward). We will pass any information on to some of the homeowners from our house to the point, if anyone can give us a report. Thanks in advance. You can email, too, at dmmaysales@aol.com. Dianne and George

Talked with Ralph Albury of Albury's Ferry last night. He was on his roof with his cell phone picking up the tower in Sandy Point. Terrible connection as you can imagine. He did say that all are fine. Lots of damage as already reported on the net. The ferrry boats all did fine. They are up and running. He had three feet of water over his ferry docks at MOW! We are all holding them up in our prayers.

Does anyone know whether Royal Palm suffered flooding? Our lower apartment came thru Francis without anything more than some rainwater on the floor around the doors and windows, but we suspect there has been more damage this time.

We spoke with someone in Treasure Cay today. They said they are in much need of everything from food basics to building supplies. (They can't get these by boat as of now.) We are looking for a plane so we can take supplies/food/generators/etc. ASAP. We are trying to depart from NC hopefully before the weekend. Please email us at bethbloflin@yahoo.com if anyone can help or can put me in contact with another source. Thanks.

Dawn, I was just reading your message when my mom called from TC/Ocean Blvd. The first call got cut off immediately, the second one was OK (communication is really difficult, and that's probably why you're having such a hard time relaying info.) She wasn't sure where Suncrest Villas are, but she wrote down your mom's name and Stafford Symonnette's name and was going to try to somehow relay the message from earlier about those people coming in today to meet your family. So I can't promise it will get thru but at least someone's trying!
Ocean Blvd. is still flooded in three spots but beginning to recede. My parent's haven't inspected anyone's home up close but Dave Price's house (as with others nearby) look OK from the road she said, perhaps missing some shingles but everythign appears to be standing. They live on the other end of Ocean Blvd. and are dealing w/their own huge mess - they have a garage/garage apartment w/a caved in ceiling that sounds like it's basically going to be a re-do. They got a bit of flooding, sand in their yard, and some 'refugees' in their guest house. The usual. She did ask us to bring bread when we come - not a loaf on the island. Sorry I don't have any specific info. to share.

In TC on 9-28 for 4 hours. House report: B.Davids beach- house is in ok shape. 2 foot flood in garage. A few leaves off thatch roof and the cross members on top missing, Plants are very bad, 2-3' sand washed out from under deck on beach side, Some minor concrete damage on sea wall. Sand blown into everything. Bob's canal house-Power boxes on dock, AC units may have flooded, Generator works but no power, dock light, fish clean table fan & light, no flood damage to house, lots of little things.
T. Larder-6? roof tiles, one window on east side has hurricane shutter compleatly gone (in backyard) but the window is intact. Front door missing one section of shutter. No apparent flood damage. Plants bad.
G. Erhart-Roof looks to be ok. All cedar timbers are on the ground with no apparent damage to the house. No apparent flood damage. your man there cleaning up and air out house.
N. Lister-20? roof tiles\ mostly on edges east and north.3-4" sand around grill area and gate to beach, hurricane shutters intact, AC unit on east side may have flooded(hard to read where water line was there), no apparent flood to house, Plant and garden bad all trellis on ground.
J. Scannelli-Can't tell difference since Francis.Roof,kitchen,Bedroom,celings,etc.,etc. Best of luck.
My take on what I saw is that it is more like Floyd with a little less building damage and the same plant damage, Flood damage a little less in some places and more in others. It does look like a war zone, Power lines still down, some power poles broken, some trees still hung up in lines, its pretty bad folks. I would not bet that any form of steady power is on for about 3 weeks, just a guess. At least toward windward beach. Best wishes to all. Barry

I forgot? when we flew over yesterday after comming over east tip of Grand Bahama we noticed long lines of what I first thought were just leaves and debris blown off Abaco onto the flats. We were at 2000 Ft and these lines were many miles long in either direction ( about nw to se ) as far as I could see. we lowered to 1000 ft. "That's not good" I said to myself. It's oil. Thousands and thousands of gallons, maybe ten's of thousands of gallons. Not diesel, black crude oil. This could have an even greater long term effect for crabbing, fishing etc.East wind will send oil to Grand Bahama and then Florida or gulfstream then ?? or West wind and back to Abaco.FYI.

After Hurricane Floyd I observed what appeared to be oil slicks in long streams; however I was relieved to find out that it was seaweed that the hurricane had dislodged. Hopefully that might also be the case here.

I hate to do this but--Please do not e-mail me for information on villas, condos, dog houses or boats. I posted specfic information on a few homes that I actually walked around and looked at in record time. I was only on the island for 4 hours, Mainly to see how the guys that work at the houses made out and of course make a list of any damage and supplies needed. I do not think I should be giving anyone a false picture of an area I realy did not look at. If you are a home owner you should be concerned. The place is a wreck, however I think I made the right choice to fly in and out on the same day. Very limited EVERYTHING-no power, no water and hearing of some food shortages. For every extra person that shows up and stays adds another burden on the system. If someone wants to ask me a question just call me in Florida-Lauderdale

Abacofever...thank you for reporting back some information. I know you can't report back everything but certain areas help. Example the Davids you reported are on windward beach next to our house and you are the first to report back on that area. It was very helpful to us to know the status of our neighbors home. Maybe if you can report any certain area's such as roads it can help answer a lot of questions on this board. Any information is better than nothing.

Am sending this from behind TC Mini Mart. Sinc's wireless working here only. Water came back on yesterday. Power on in some areas expect more today. Phones working locally only. Flooding on roads has gone down and are now passable. I can't get specific about houses etc as you can't tell unless you've been inside. Just about every place has had some water damage, either salt water from surge or rain. Nothing like Floyd but pretty ugly. Airports open. Fuel available. Spinnaker opening today for drinks only. Their kitchen was destroyed. No other restaurants open.Leaving here at noon. HAD ENOUGH!
Hi all - I am in FL now - got here Tuesday on Vintage out of TCB after spending Jeanne and Frances in my house on Galleon Bay. Had a lot more water - lost many more shingles in Jeanne. But, still have a roof (under tarps) and had no salt water. The surge was about half-way between Floyd and Frances. Jeanne was much worse than Frances, esp in MHH. I plan to go back when they get the power and water and phones back. Maybe a week or two - dont know. Suggest folks dont go until services are back - there isnt much you can do anyway unless you have an intact house with a big generator and there aren't many of those!
Windward Beach Rd. and Ocean Blvd were both flooded and impassable until Tuesday PM - Ocean may be still. There was extensive rain water damage to most buildings. The stuff was driven through any available opening, and through roofs when shingles were blasted off. Blown out soffits, gables, fascia, windows, etc. are common. Problem now is getting materials for repairs. When I left Tuesday building materials were said to be duty-free (without the onerous forms and inspections first announced) on the Cruisers Net, but the customs officer at TC airport hadnt heard anything about it. So, more to come....
After two days of being unable to reach my parents here is the latest:
TC
Water is back (it comes and goes) but its been mostly on since last night.
The hotel is partly open.
Spinnaker is closed.
The supermarket in TC is open and there are no shortages.
Phones within the TC area are working (ie, TC to TC) .
BEC (Electric Company) is working extremely hard in order to able to restore power as soon as possible. They are all over TC fixing lines and poles. Doing a great job.
Yesterday for the first time since Jeanne there was boat activity in the marina.
MHH
Solomons Market is open - no apparent shortages besides generators.
Most of the hardware stores in MHH are reopening to the public today after cleanup.
Price is Right remains closed. Other grocery stores are opened or reopening.
Airports (MHH and TCB) are open.
More later
The massive clean up and fixing job underway here is yielding the first results.
Property notes
For the people that had asked information about specific property:
THe pink garages next to the tennis courts have shingles missing and might have been partly flooded. The overall structure is pretty much intact.
The Blue house near the point lost a significant portion of the roof.
The Turquoise house -Dolphin smthg- (always near the point) has no apparent exterior damage.

All I can tell you is that Morgan Arundel had diner at his place last night, having brought over several chicken, which they cooked over coals outside. At the end
Manuletha asked Morgan if she could have the leftovers, as Jackie and the kids were getting tired of eating canned soup.
They have water and at times electricity back in their area.
My sister-in-law was in TC arranging repairs from Frances, and stayed for Jeanne. She just returned home to Florida this afternoon safe and sound with a report on our house. We are near the point on Windward Beach, between the Thompson's and the Bracey's house. Surge did not enter the house, inches of water probably from the winds and rain, not the sea. Flooding all around, but has now gone down. Deck on ocean side raised, but still there. A few shutters damaged from flying debri. I will tell her to post details, but we are grateful it wasn't worse than it was.

We just heard about 15 min ago from Donna at the TC Beach villa's. Donna, David, Isreal all are fine. We did get through to Donna by phone. The villa's faired pretty well in general. Of course there is roof damage, some water from rains not sea water. There is alot of beach erosion on the beach in front of the villa's. The villa area does not have power yet but expecting it shortly. Florence's bakery is not up yet but will be soon. It was good to hear that all families are safe and sound.

I just go off the phone with Jennifer Sawyer in the Royal Palm office. She has a list of all units and the damage. Anyone interested in hearing about their unit should give her a call as soon as possible. We have an upstairs unit and had some water damage and our ceiling came down. Jennifer said that they are encouraging homeowners with damage to come down as soon as possible so an accurate accessment can be made of the damage for the insurance company.
Good luck to everyone.

When someone has time, could you give us the status of JIC and Rich's rentals in TC? We realize this is not critical, compared to locals and homeowners who have sustained losses.
But if there's anyway possible, we're still planning on coming back for our 4th trip in Jan. and would rather start booking airlines, etc soon.

We heard from Lucy Symonette and Robert Edgecombe about our villa (OV901) and we were fortunate not to have any damage, other than some minor roof leaks. Most of the ocean villas came through ok, though 902 and 903 had roof damage. We had some water come through the door but it was minor. Can't believe how fortunate we are, especially when so many have suffered such devastation.

Returned from Treasure on Tuesday. Power came back on Monday about 6:00PM in the mid-windward beach section. I do not know if all of windward beach is on. I would guess that it is, however I think the power will be on and off as BEC strightens things out over the next few weeks. In general things are much better than I ever would have thought after only 8-10 days. Special thanks to BEC crew in Treasure. Those guys did not stop for 1 minute. Saw them working past dark with headlights to get it done.
Don-Windward/"Seaclusion" house. I may have been in error. I looked closer at beach side of roof and see a place that may have a hole. Otherwise shutters are intact. Could not see inside. Your other house on the hill is missing a good number of roof tiles.
K.Batchlor-Beach villa: Appears to be intact,do not know about flood.
Beach villas in general-weird, some perfect, some missing quite a few roof shingles. Do not know about flood.
In many cases a good number of you (home & villa Owners)will be finding a spot or two where water found a way in. A few people already had a mold problem in just 3-4 days. Find someone to inspect inside for you and dry out rugs, etc. Ok. Best fishes.

Ron,
I haven't checked this bulletin for a week, but I can tell you that Lee (my dad) at Brigantine Bay Villas reports minimal damage overall. He's likely getting new roofs and floors for all villas, but they came through without any major structural damage. The biggest probs were that the docks were damaged and his boat sank. Property itself looked good when my brother went last week to help with the boat claim.
