Just a little news regarding Marsh Harbour...
Water is being pumped so at least that is up and running. Some cell phones are working, but the person I was speaking with had to go to "Water Tower Hill" up past the Lazy Parrot on the main road out of Marsh Harbour to Treasure Cay to have any reception. Apparently, there were many people who had made the treck up this hill so they could make an out going call on the cell phones. Presently, stores do have food.

I have a message to Patricia and Diana in Marsh Harbour. Their father, Louis Varga in Nassau is trying to contact them to find out if they are okay. He has a son-in-law called Chuck Albury who runs a marina. If anyone knows any of these people, can you ask them to either send me a message, or contact Mr Varga at 393-5705 or cell 636-7958.

Received E'mail from Marti Brown on 'The other Woman'. 4+ feet of water in the Jib Room at high tide, but no injuries all boats survived unscathed due to the efforts of Tom and Jason. This has been verified by another returning hurricane survivor this afternoon.

9/29/04 315PM – MESSAGE FROM JOHNNYCAKE LOCATED ON PELICAN SHORE IN MARSH HARBOUR.

Asked if he needed anything? “Nothing right now”, stated johnnycake.

“Have to go 6 miles out of Marsh Harbour on the road to Treasure Cay and get on a boulder to get any reception on my cell phone. My house and Arpil & Tim Higgs house are OK. Had a 25 foot surge in front of our houses. Cannot get over to Eastern Shores as there is too much debris. I have city water and just got a generator last night.:) We are passing it around to all in our area. Entire business section in Marsh Harbour flooded out but water has subsided. Example: Price Right had 2 feet of water, Camera Shop and Bakery had 3 feet of water. All businesses are closed. All will have to totally restock. Cable Bahamas says some areas may get Internet service in a few days.;) Small isolated areas have power:).” LOST CONNECTION :( END.

Many thanks to johnnycake for his efforts in reaching us. Our hats are off to you! It was great hearing johnnycakes voice again and knowing all are safe. Our prayers and thoughts are with all. God Bless you johnnycake.

9/30/04 1027AM – MESSAGE FROM JOHNYCAKE LOCATED ON PELICAN SHORES, MARSH HARBOUR.

Johnnycake was calling us from on top of a rock North of Marsh Harbour. Transmission was very poor but this is what we were able to understand during his call.
1. Private citizens of Spanish Wells brought over via boat ice, water and some frozen supplies.
2. Johnnycake who owns Sea Star Car Rentals donated one of his vans so they could distribute the goods to those who need supplies within MHH and surrounding areas on Great Abaco. The supplies are also being delivered to Man-O-War, Hope Town, Green Turtle, and Guana. Johnnycake could not thank these people enough for their support to Abaco.
3. BEC is working very hard to restore power and doing an excellent job.
4. Electric has been restored to the area of MHH from the Shell Station to around the Memorial Plaza and some areas of Murphy Town and Dundas Town.
5. No water around MHH airport terminal building.
6. Most roads cleared enough within MHH, Murphy Town and Dundas Town to get around by car. Still not able to get out onto Eastern Shores. First house on right as you go to Eastern Shores has a lot of debris around it including a vehicle under it.
7. All downtown businesses are closed today most are still cleaning up.
8. Most of johnnycakes cars are out with emergency personnel and insurance people. Johnnycake is using the front steps at his old office building next to Solomons’s if any one needs to find him for a rental car.
9. Abaco Insurance is using johnnycakes old office(next to Solomens) to conduct their insurance business if you are looking for them.
10. K&S and Texaco are pumping gas. Shell not pumping yet.
11. Only Private planes landing at Marsh Harbour Airport.
12. Jib Room – most docks are OK.
13. Abaco Hardware open for building supplies only.
14. Bahama Palm Shores has power according to what johnnycake could see.

Again we thank johnnycake for all the information he has been able to provide. As we are aware, johnnycakes cell bill is really getting very high and we all appreciate all of his efforts getting this information to all. If any of you would like to help with the cost of johnnycakes cell bill, please contact us directly at avr@abacovacations.com. Any help would be much appreciated.

Has anyone heard from Bob and Patti Toler on Eastern Shore?
They got a message out to family that they're fine (no other info), and folks have reported elsewhere that the Cruiser's Net is operational, so I expect they are fine yet exhausted and busy. I do wonder on the condition of the road to the Eastern Shore, Floyd messed it up bad and it sounds like Jeanne may have done the same (though Frances didn't do so much).

At 5:00 this afternoon Abaco time We were able to get through to "PaPa Lou" at his house in Marsh Harbour. They live in Government Subdivision, It is a land line, not cell so it looks like things are moving along well, and ahead of schedule. I hope that others will have the luck that we had and are able to talk to thier families.

You can watch ZNS (Bahamas) news online. Goto http://www.dabahamianting.com (http://www.dabahamianting.com/) ... on the righthand side of the homepage, you can click on Hurricane Jeanne 9/27. They show video footage from Marsh Harbour area.Listened to those broadcasts on the radio. Am in Treasure Cay and that was ALL I had for info during those long days. Have a complaint to send to ZNS about the fact we got no reports for Abaco when we were totally out of communication with anyone. Turned out we could call Marsh, but I didn't know. The reports sounded like we were all isolated in each area. All there were were the regular broadcasts and had no idea whether Marsh was even open! Thanks again. Colette.

We Just Returned From Eastern Shore Last Night. We Own Eventide. The Devestation Is Incredible. The Road Impassable. Debris Blocking The Road. Sur-la-mer Saw Your Post. Saw People Working At Your House. Looks Like Alot Of Damage To Your House And Car. Lots Of People About Cleaning Up. Water Is On. Phone Working Inter-island, No Electric. Spoke With Bec Said Weeks To Months Befor Power Restored. Transformers Gone. Storm Surge Large. All Dock On North Side Gone. Most On South Side Severly Damage Or Gone. Did Not Check Every House But If You Contact Me I Will See If I Can Remember What Kind Of Damage I Saw. I Will Be Honest, It Is Somewhat A Blur To Me, I Think I Am In Shock. Most People On Eastern Shore Agree Much Worse Than Floyd. Most Seawalls Breached Or Missing Completly. I Know This Is Bad News, But I Hope It Helps

For those of you who live on Eastern Shore, they have filled in the 's' curve and my little Land Rover and I have cleared the way from Blue Dolphinto the Peas and Rice---if they can get the big container they brought in to dump trash in out of the road, its driveable at least to my house--it's not clear, but you can fit a car through (or a fire truck, or ambulance, or taxi). I don't know how long the dumper will be across the road, but when it's gone---its clear sailing!

Hi Roberta None of the hurricanes did serious damage to Regattas, thank God! There was NO flooding and only some roof damage and broken window in hillside bldg. 2 beachfront units had minor water damage to ceilings. The sundeck in the water was destroyed though. There was vegetation damage. However, they are closed for about 3 weeks (last report was last week) due to no power & no phones, not because of damage there. Better call CanAm exchange for update on reopening.

Yay! Of course Pattie, you can no longer call it the Eastern Cay, but back to its old name of the Eastern Shore. ;)

Glad to hear things are moving along, as bad as Jeanne and Frances were, at least speedy response and lessons learned from Floyd seem to be in evidence. It seems like everyone really is pitching in and getting things done (as I would expect).

I'll email you all soon (about cottage space and so on...)

...with all the chaos and destruction the brave Abaconians are facing. But here goes: we have a house in the Great Abaco Club that took some damage. My husband and some workmen are flying to MH tomorrow to see what they can do and I'm trying to decide whether or not to go along. I have GOT to watch the Presidential debate on Friday night! A few days back I was sent an email indicating that at the site http://www.hopetownfirerescue.com had a listing of damage to houses and docks posted to their web site. I went to that site and quickly reviewed the damage posted. Now their site just had a single page requesting donations. Does anyone know what happened to the informatin that they had on their site as it was great.

26 Sept - 10:15 EDT
We have re-established contact with Hope Town. Everybody is safe on the island, there are no injuries. Damage assessments are in progress.

26 Sept - 11:30 EDT
Relayed info from HT .....

All souls accounted for, no concerns for health or welfare. They are working on the damage assessment.

The breach in the dune in White Sound was quoted by Rocky Bay as "not any bigger but more defined". People can still move north
and south past the breach.

The dune behind the cholera graveyard had no major loss at that point. The water from the ballfield came all the way up to Lovers Lane
but stopped short of Vernon's Grocery. Properties on the water at the entrance to Hope Town Harbour took a beating from NW wind.
Phones within the Settlement are working but not off the island. BEC remains off.

26 Sept - 16:45 EDT

No concerns on Elbow Cay for health or welfare. Gas and diesel are available at Lighthouse Marina and Seaspray. All roads have been
cleared to allow vehicle traffic. The only breach in the dune is the one that was caused by Hurricane Frances - the dune between Rocky Bay
and Third Sunrise held.
From Blue Dolphin : "Marsh Harbour airport is completely underwater with major damage. Private flights not possible right now. As water drains
will know more tomorrow"
Only local phone service in Hope Town Settlement. BEC remains off.

27 Sept - 00:30 EDT

Full damage assessment is still being worked on. The limited number of personnel are working hard to make a full and complete assessment
of all properties.
We do have some definitive information on some properties.

Tip O' Tahiti (Dorros Cove) minor damage to lattice
Sandcastle (Dorros Cove) minor shingle & gutter damage
Bali Hai (Dorros Cove) major roof and dock damage
Dorros Cove Dock major damage
Rocky Bay (WS) no damage from Hurricane Jeanne
Harbour Lights (HT) roof detached
Harbours Edge (HT) major structure damage, dock destroyed

end

27 Sept - 16:30 EDT

Cellular Service - It is possible to make outgoing calls only, and only sometimes, from the
top of the lighthouse. People are climbing the lighthouse and then waving their phones to try to
get a signal. No incoming calls. Outgoing ( at the top of the lighthouse) is very sporadic.

Marsh Harbour Airport is open but only private aircraft, Cherokee Air and Abaco Air are currently flying.
Clypso Air should be flying from the US tomorrow.

27 Sept -18:00 EDT

I am not sure about everyone on the Island, but My family in MH do have Power, cable, internet, and phones back, some are not so lucky, it all depends on where you are and the Damage in the Area. I know that they were having trouble restoring to some low lying areas in MH because of the water damage in the homes. My family lives on a hill, and sustained little additional damage so it was easier to restore. I am sure that if you go to Abaco you will find someone that is watching the Debate, If not have someone Record and watch it when you get back.
I know that I really want to watch the debate, more than most of my family and friends, but If I had to chose between Abaco under any circumstances and the Pres. Debate. I am going to Abaco everytime. I hope that I was of some help, probably not much, and that everything with your home goes well.

I drove out Eastern Shore today and for those that have not been over yet, the road is now drivable ,all the way out I believe, we stopped a few houses short. Cell phones are working (ATT&Singular for sure) Electric is on/off in town. We had a great lunch at Sappodilly's. The water pressure on the point is the best I have ever seen, it is amazing the pressure when no one is using it. Do not expect power any time too soon,it seems that every transformer was either submerged or ripped off its base.
Please be careful on the road, a lot of erosion right up to the edge, making the road quite narrow in spots with a drop off the edge of 1-2 feet.We should all thank the owners that were able to get the road cleared and filled. Duty above and beyond call.
THANK YOU.Now the real work starts to get our houses back in order so we can get over and support the local economy. At least I think someone has to support the Abaco economy so it may as well be me. Good Luck to all. John F.jr
