Hello All,
I would just like to clear up some obvious misconceptions about the phrase "Abaco Is Not For Sissies" which was originally created by myself and Carol Ray some 8 years ago.
The intention of doing the "Abaco Is Not For Sissies" page was to try and let potential visitors know that this was not the United States, Mexico or Nassau, but a small group of islands that had limited infrastructure and limited resources and all the associated problems that go along with that.
Believe it or not, we still get many visitors here who have not taken advantage of the weath of information provided by this Board and it's Archives.
Over the past few years of living here I have been bemused by the reaction of some of the visitors who ask questions about where the nearest hospital is located; where is the ATM in Guana or Elbow Cay (but surely the supermarket gives "cash back" instead right ?) and all the conversations on VHF when the power has been off for eight hours, the comes on for two and goes out for a further eight.
Their cell phone and the coffee maker doesn't work, also a lot of VHF hours on that subject too - normally on a Sunday morning. Those who use the VHF and don't understand that there are at least 20 others listening, are sadly mistaken !
Well, it all provides endless entertainment for those who live here so I guess that is a good thing, because despite the endless sun and beautiful surroundings, everybody is a little starved for amusement and variety.
"Abaco Is Not For Sissies" still remains true but it does not include things like pools. A pool here is great and much appreciated during the summer months. Sure, you can jump in the boat and go swimming in the sea but if the workday is done and the sun has gone down, there is nothing like taking twelve steps, going for a dip in the pool and cooling off.
Now the pool may not circulate, the pump is fried because of a BEC surge and spare parts are expected in about a month. The pool is turning green because chemicals are not available as the hardware store ran out two weeks ago and forgot to order more........
