Just returned in June from 2 weeks in Hope Town and already booked 2 weeks for next May. But we want to make an early December trip. Considering going to Abaco again but my husband suggested checking out some place new. Anyone familiar with Belize and places to stay there. Yeah, I know this is the "Abaco Board" and I'm an Abaco Addict. . . but I know many of you travel much more than I do and might have a suggestion. Thanks.

One of the villas at Ramon's Village on Ambergris Cay could do the trick. The Belizeans are great people. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve is teeming with wildlife if you enjoy diving or snorkeling.

Thanks. Will check it out. Familiar with a place called Banana Beach Hotel on Ambergris Caye?

Hi Cathy, Try this link. I'm also a member there, and I have found it to be a great resource for travel questions about anywhere you can imagine. There are 3 message boards, 1 for technical questons, 1 for specific travel questions, and 1 for anything you want to talk about.

I'm an Abaco lover too, but have managed a couple of trips to Belize in the last few years -- one land-based at the afore-mentioned Ramon's Village, and one which was a sailing charter out of Ambergris Caye. I have detailed trip reports on my webpage: http://homestead.com/islandtime/MainPage1.html.

Belize is very different from the Abacos, but is still an off-the-beaten path gem. If you go there, however, you need to manage your expectations -- Belize is NOT about the beaches.

We go to Ambergris Caye, Belize for two weeks over the Christmas and New Year's holidays. The people are wonderful, and speak English. The trips to the Mayan ruins are a great experience and the rain forests are very interesting. We did not find the reefs as pretty as Abaco and the beaches are nothing like Abacos. The food is very reasonably priced, but it is very expensive to fly there during the holidays. It's an entirely different world.

I ditto comments about Ambergris and Ramon's Village -- both are great; people on Ambergris are phenomenally nice. One thing I have to say, though, is the food isn't nearly as good as Abaco. And vacationing is all about the food, isn't it???

My wife and I went to Belize in February. We flew into Belize City form Miami. We stayed in Corozal, about 10 miles from the Mexican border. We had a ball. The prices there are unbelievably cheap. We looked at an oceanfront lot for $60,000 US. We stayed at Tony's Inn, in an oceanfront room for $60 US a night. Dinner for two with cocktails and appetizers was $25 US. We love Abaco, we were married on the beach by Vernon in Hope Town, and are headed to Old Bahama Bay in Westend tomorrow from Jupiter on a 60 foot Hatteras. The Bahamas are our first love, but Belize comes in a very close second.

You Better Belize It!

P.S. Kalik is Better than Beliken by a mile!

Thanks for all the great replies and links. Just wondering, we have about 2 weeks and were leaning towards staying on Ambergris Caye but wondering after the previous reply if we might be wise to stay at least a few days mainland somewhere. Any ideas?
