. . . . . Toby, is that one of those cars from the time when you could "have any color you want as long as it's black"? Or maybe it's a newfangled golfcart? Or, it could be your first car and you never sold it. In either case, it's a very cool "ride" but I don't believe you'll outrun Jeanne in that.......

Not again! What I dont like is when all six computer models agree with each other...I was looking at that this morning and they all are in the same area- us! The good part is that hurricane season is on the decline now- we have past that 'peak' point in the season....fingers and toes crossed ( again)!
From here on Guana I can say it’s pretty obvious there is a storm out there. Without the weather channel or computer, you can see it. The wind has been blowing out of the south, southeast at 15-20+ knots for 3 days now. The surf is amazing, huge waves! Our big beautiful beach that Frances left is now a ragey surf. The wind is not enough wind to create these waves. Nippers has become a internet/business cafe. Johnny has a phone and computer as well as all the latest info. Thanks to Johnny we have internet and can get back to business. Everyone is tired of this but we're all taking it in stride. What can we do but put the #@*! shutters up and wait? Most people have been cleaning up after this last one but now we wait again. That's the hardest part. Capt' Easy still has no power but he had a pot luck last night like no other. It was awesome! Thanks Easy! I am sitting in my copula in our new house on the ocean and I wish I could duplicate the sound. the wind is "howling" and all the windows are covered in salt. I guess we're putting up shutters and getting ready today like most folks on the island. The grocery is to be stocked today for the first time since before Frances. At least we'll eat well during Jeanne!

The 5am NOAA projections show Hurricane Jeanne headed directly towards the center of Great Abaco Island, then continuing on through Grand Bahama to Florida. Not good news! If it's course holds true, this would place the central Abacos directly in line with the worst part of the storm. Things should start getting wild early Saturday morning.
It's time to start saying prayers for a change in direction. If that doesn't work, pray that the storm moves quickly over Abaco and doesn't linger like Frances did. Regardless, some serious prayers are now in order.

Miami Herald
Florida, the Bahamas placed on alert for Hurricane Jeanne
By MARTIN MERZER
mmerzer@herald.com
Forecasters issued a tropical storm watch for the central Bahamas and alerted residents of South and Central Florida this morning as Hurricane Jeanne edged closer to the area. They predicted landfall somewhere in Florida -- possibly South Florida -- by Sunday.
If so, Jeanne would become the fourth hurricane to strike the state during this deadly, destructive and freakish hurricane season.
''It would be no surprise to see Jeanne reach major hurricane status in 48 to 72 hours . . .,'' said forecasters Jack Beven of the National Hurricane Center in West Miami-Dade County. ``Given the forecast of the steering currents, Florida should pay close attention to the evolution of Jeanne.''
He said the storm, already responsible for more than 1,000 deaths, mostly in Haiti, was expected to begin a steady approach toward the Bahamas and Florida.
This morning's official forecast showed the core of a Category 2 hurricane, with 110 mph winds, coming dangerously close to the area between Palm Beach and Vero Beach -- the same region struck by Hurricane Frances early this month -- veering north and making landfall around Cape Canaveral.
Forecasters emphasized, however, that such forecasts constantly change, that Florida's entire East Coast was in danger of a direct hit, and that Jeanne's outlying effects were likely to reach much of the state.
The local forecast for South Florida called for increasingly cloudiness and rain Friday night, with heavy rain and wind Saturday and Saturday night.
High surf and riptides already are sweeping South Florida's coastline, mostly in Palm Beach and Broward counties, and beach erosion has been reported.
At 5 a.m EDT, a tropical storm watch was issued for the central Bahamas, including Cat Island, the Exumas, Long Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador. A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible in the watch area within 36 hours. Forecasters said a hurricane watch could be required for the northwestern Bahamas later today.
Meanwhile, Ivan returned -- call it Ivan2.
A resilient piece of Hurricane Ivan, the storm that viciously assaulted the Gulf Coast last week, looped over the Atlantic, passed over Florida, returned to the Gulf of Mexico, redeveloped into a tropical storm Wednesday and was punching the Louisiana and upper Texas Gulf Coasts with rain and wind this morning.
The center of reborn Tropical Storm Ivan was expected to make landfall near the Texas-Louisiana border tonight.

Erin--Batten down the hatches again. Just spoke with Peter and he is putting plywood back up on the new house tomorrow. Hopefully it will go somewhere else but the 48 hour forecast doesn't look good and the NHC seems to be doing a pretty good job 48 hours and in. Maybe something will push it to 28 or more North before Abaco but it sure seems unlikely at this point.
If it is going to hit, let's hope for a little more speed thru town this time!

Just watched the tropical update on the weather channel..Don't know why I bother! As Dr. Steve Lyons passes his hand across Abaco and Grand Bahama to show the path of Jeanne, his comment is..FIRST POTENTIAL IMPACT WILL BE TO THE COAST OF FLORIDA!!!..Has to pass over us, but wont impact us!! What an ***!!! These hurricanes could destroy islands in the carribbean, killing along the way, but landfall is not made until it hits the US, according to the weather channel!!
That would be beacuse its a US weather station.

I understand that its a US weather channel...but life is life and land is land, regardless of nationality!!
I agree completely. The US news people just don't get the big picture. They should do their job and "report" what is what no matter where.

......TWC did quote that she was 340 miles East of Great Abaco Island. And, there was live coverage last time in Marsh Harbour. Maybe there is some hope for these guys.

Jeb Bush's 9am emergency news conference began with saying that Florida is very much a part of it's Carribean neighbors - mentioning the Bahamas in particular regarding the hard hit the Bahamas took during Frances. He was very empathetic towards our Bahamian neighbors. The local NBC affilate now has around the clock news coverage of the storm and is constantly mentioning Great Abaco and Grand Bahama. The Weather Channel has a piece on Bahamians preparing and we even saw Victor Patterson of Marsh Harbour on t.v. on The Weather Channel this morning.

This goes to show you why the rest of the world seems to think that America is so horrible. They do not see the people on this board that are worried about our friends and neighbors in the Bahamas. All they get to see is TWC saying the first impact will be in FL. And when they read post on the board just after the storm has passed that only ask how someones summer/vacation home is it supports what they see in the Media.
I commend the Board members who waited a while before they started asking about how thier material possesions were. The showed Compassion and caring, they were worried about the People, and how they did, they wanted to help. They didnt ask someone to stop taking care of thier house, just to see if thier summer property was OK.
The residents did a wonderful job of checking things out and posting when they had news, but it still didnt stop some people from getting angry that no one had gone to look at thier house yet. I have family that couldnt get to thier homes for 5 days because of flooding, and blocked roads. Compassion people, they didnt know if they had lost everything they owned but they still were willing to send information on thier state side friends homes.
I hope to see a greater showing of compassion in some of the Posts next time. Some of you out there wanted to know how your Other house was when some people lost thier only home. So as a Board lets show that all Americans are not heartless Greed mongers. Mabey it will start to reflect in everything that we do, and we can change the way the world looks at us, at least on our little Board.

After reading my Post, and some people graciously, and others not so graciously informed me it may be taken that I am anti-American, and feel as though people have no right to worry about there Property.
I am far from anti-American, I love my country very much, I was pointing out that the Rest of the world only gets a chance to see us through MEDIA. That is the Demon here, not Americans. When the Media fails to recognize the Bahamas as a Country, or as first Land fall, the rest of the world thinks we Dont care. I dont say this because it is what I think, it is because of what my friends, from all around the World have told me.
Part of my Post was ment to offend, it was for those who posted in the middle of a thread asking about Family, and friends to ask how thier house was. I thought it inconsiderate, and selfish. Im sure many others agree with me on that and some dissagree. I was meerly stating opinion, and the fact that this is a Media outlet, and when an American Posts to ask about his house two hours after a storm hits, before asking how the people faired it makes us all look bad.
I agian thank all those who posted for all the information they gave. And for the want, and desire to help in any way possible. I only asked that we show a little more tact when posting post Jeanie.
I think it would be appropriate to seperate posts for info on people from those on Properties. This way we will be able to answer, and ask questions without having to sort through so many threads.
I thank you all for allowing me a voice, I also thank you for yours. I just hope that I didnt offend too bad, and if I did that I can be forgiven
Thanks, Wonkee

Wonkee,
I got on the site looking to see how Hopetown faired (the people, not the place, although I also wanted to know that everyones homes, in which they grew up in and/or live, had not been destroyed). Your point was exactly what crossed my mind as I scanned the board - I was looking to see if everyone was alright, and there was a lot of what you were talking about to wade through. Anyway, you're not alone in that thought on either side of the Gulf Stream.
I'll look for your address on the board to drop you a line because, to the point, I've been watching the storms this season with a lot of worry for all hands in Hopetown.
Best wishes,
John Alexander
