We are going to Marsh Harbor on Oct. 2 staying at Regatas. I am looking for any helpful info. re. what resturants etc. are open. Also do you need a car or golf cart to go from the condos to the stores etc.

Any suggestions re. snorkling trips would also be great.

You do not really need a car. You can walk to most all of the restaurants and there are a few small provision stores nearby. The main grocery stores are a bit of a walk, and then you have to lug the bags bag. A quick cab ride there would be my recommendation. You are very centrally located at Regattas and will be able to walk most places. Renting bicycles to explore the island is also a nice option.

I strongly urge you to rent a boat. This will enable you to get to the outter islands. There are places you can dock the boat overnight. You really don't need a car unless walking is a problem as everything including great restaurants are within walking distance. You can walk to the shore and access Mermaid reef, but there is a whole other reef world out there. Go to Dive Abaco as they run Scuba and Snorkel trips. They are basically accross the street at the Moorings Marina area--Conch Inn Marina. Get a copy of Dodges Guide to Abaco. It will answer alot of your questions. You can order it on line. You do not need to be a world class boater to rent a small powerboat. It will enhance your trip greatly. Otherwise you will need to take feeries, which is fun, to get to the outter islands.

mark--I've been going to Abaco since 1990

Only restaurants open when we left yesterday AM were Snappas, the restaurant at Abaco Beach Resort, Hummingbird, Janies and new breakfast/lunch behind the plaza where the "Mermaid" is which name escapes. Have no idea what will be back on line when you get there.

My son and I are coming down for the week of October 10. Is that too early for the Lofty Fig to be open? Would anyone know?

We stayed at the Regattas for a week last November - no boat, no car, and we had a fabulous time, the best and most relaxing I have ever had!! We either walked or took a cab places, especially for groceries.

A boat would have been fun, but I don't feel it's necessary! You can always take the ferry.

We've stayed at Regattas twice and already have a week reserved for next Easter. From time to time, it's helpful to rent a bike or moped or take a cab, esp. if you're really stocking up on groceries but actually you can do that on your way in from the airport. The cab drivers are extremely accommodating. But, truly, once you're settled in, you don't need transportation to get to any restaurants; I don't think any restaurant is more than a 15-minute walk. You may decide to cook in your unit most of the time anyway, given the fact that some restaurants may not have re-opened by the time you get there. Our unit had nearly new cook pots, utensils, etc., and nothing really seemed to be lacking.

I happen to think that Mermaid Beach is too far to walk to but lots of others have done it . This last trip, 6 of us rented a van to get up to Treasure Cay but it sounds as if there's a great deal of damage up there so perhaps that wouldn't work for you . If you like boating, though, we would highly recommend renting a power boat to get to the outer islands. Some are accessible by ferry but some are not. You might also get to see dolphins while you're cruising through the Sea of Abaco.

Hope you like Regattas - we LOVE it !!! (try to get a unit on the beach if you can - our favorites are 77, 78,79 - in that area - a great view from the patio though I understand the deck was destroyed by the recent hurricane. Too bad - that's a favorite spot.)

Also hope you have a great time despite the "hardships" you're sure to endure as MHH gets itself back in order.

Did the units on the beach at Regattas survive Jeanne? I could see some damage to the roofs of the units on the hill on the weather channel? Any updates would be very helpful.
