There are several reports of folks returning to Abaco and I would suspect that many are those who have an "interest" of some sort - ie; homes, boats, etc.
For sure, cleanup efforts will be ongoing for a while, but I have to believe that the return of "the vacationer" is also a vital component of this recovery. The delimma is "how" to decide "when" we might expect a return and "where" we might consider staying after these types of storms pass thru.
Given this, maybe there could be a thread started with "places that are ready for visitors" such as lodging, restaurants, etc which would at a minimum require electricity and running water. It would also be helpful to get some sort of official status from the airports.

We would also be interested in a thread about how the recovery is going. We will be travelling to Abaco in about a month and would like to do some planning. Thanks and good luck on the cleanup! Looking forward to seeing everyone
:) Good news! Finally got through to the Abaco Inn this morning. They have taken a "Beating" but are planning to re-open in mid-October (they are normally closed in September anyway).

That's great news! I'll try them later today, but did they give you other details? I'm supposed to be their first guest when they re-open. Any idea what I can expect?

We are slated for a vacation in mid October........Inasmuch as we are empathetic to recovery, we're also concerned about whether anything will be open during our stay...... We had booked a rental prior to Hurricane Frances. Having lived in FL a number of years, I certainly know what it's like to be evacuated because of not only hurricanes, but fires as well. As the poster stated there will always be 'visitors' to beautiful places such as the Abacos and that should not be discounted by any means.......We want to emphasize the fact that in no way are we disregarding the fact that people are in the process of getting their lives back on track. We also realize that there will always be that looming factor of a hurricane breeding in the Carribean at this time of year. Guess we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed........
Respectfully,
Tim

Regarding places to stay on Elbow that are operational: As you read, Abaco Inn plans to re-open in mid- Oct, we have moved our re-opening up to mid-Oct at Turtle Hill & On Da Beach should open around the 12th. Hope Town Harbour Lodge & Sea Spray are open now. Have not yet heard any specifics about the other restaurants such as Harbour's Edge or Jack's, but will try to find out. I remember that after Floyd that it was a real confidence booster to know that our guests still wanted to come and that noone bailed on us. The place won't look quite the same for awhile to come, but the feeling is still there, the people are wonderful and the ocean's just as beautiful as ever.

13 DAYS AND A BAG DRAG
My fiancee and I have been waiting since March to come for our first visit. It's the only thing that is getting us through these crazy wedding plans.
Whatever is open is open. And a week in Abaco under any conditions beats heck out of the SoCal freeways.
Are the boat rental companies in operation? I haven't tried to contact Blue Wave, who we are planning to rent through.

We are still planning on our trip to Hope Town the last week in October and are looking forward to our usual good time, but we are also ready to roll up our sleeves if needed.

We are planning on bringing a large group to GTC in early december. We can't wait.
Any word on the Robert's Cottages on Black sound? The three houses grouped together.
