luggage size

Does any one have any experience with oversize bags. My rod case measures 88 inches long and the airline website allows up to 84 inches. It does not state what happens if you are over size. There is an additional fee if your bag is to heavy, but it doesn't say anything about being too long. We are flying Continental in the States and taking Gulfstream from Ft. Lauterdale to Marsh Harbor.

I took rods to The Abacos in a 7' plus rod tube and had no problems, also on Gulfstream.
Most airlines have special allowances for fishing equipment, you can call them and ask.

I've had the same experience as R, but I would call the airlines just to put your mind at ease.
