First of all,we are hoping that residents are recovering reasonably well. Our hearts go out to all who braved the wrath of Frances.....

Question:

We were wondering if anyone can report the damage caused to Hopetown as we're slated for a much needed vacation mid October.......Respectfully, we realize this may be a bit inappropriate at this time, but we're really not sure if our rental will be liveable for that period......We contacted the realtor, but she was in the states during the hurricane and hasn't assessed any damage to the properties as of this posting.......

Any info is sincerely appreciated and again, our prayers go out to those in the Abacos.....Many thanks!

Sincerely,

Tim

Change of subject, sorry, but I've been trying to find out about how the Abaco Inn is, Hope Town Harbour Lodge and Lynnie asked me to see if anyone knows how her house is? Thanks - Judy

spent Friday night at the Lodge in Hopetown after a quick flight in to check the extent of damage. Damage was severe, but nothing like Floyd.......
Abaco Inn was momicked...and everywhere everything facing the ocean has been sandblasted of paint. Lots of various degrees of roof damage. There is sand EVERYWHERE. Palms are all stripped and landscape trashed, but landscape in general looked greener than the Carolina Coast does after a hurricane hit. Cleanup is in progress everywhere..., and once power is returned repairs will speed up.
From the water it looked like the North End really took a beating.

Even covered in sand, the new tarmac was a pleasure to ride on!

The gap between Momma's Marlin & Rocky Point is huge, but the road is clear.
Was good to see that everyone(and everyting) had fared so well

Had a wonderful dinner at the Lodge, as well as a few kaliks at Seaspray...

Harry Weldon has posted pictures at his web site some of the damage to the dune south of the Abaco Inn. Some of these pictures return, “File not found”. You will find some will return images.

WOW !!!!! incredible pictures of dune breach. i had no idea of the extent of the damage. these pictures make one appreicate the wonderful job dunes are doing in absorbing the power of hurricane surges. clearly, dunes are a wonderful resource and should be both appreciated and protected. thanks.

I had seen a post regarding dock damage on Lubbers. Does anyone have any more details? I don't have a house yet to worry about, but how about damage to homes on Lubbers also? Thanks.

Does anyone have a more detailed report on Abaco Inn (I'm not sure what "momicked" means), how severe is the damage, etc? They were supposed to re-open on Oct. 14, and I am supposed to arrive that day for my first trip to Abaco. Great timing, I know.

Thanks for your help - Still looking forward to coming.

Bruce

Some houses got it worse than others, Bruce. Some lost their docks, or they became warped and/or lost planks. Most of the damage is trees down and water damage; those on the west side were barely touched as far as I can see. Landscaping is obviously a mess, and the harbour is full of the most foul smelling (and stinging!) seaweed, so only a couple of boats back in the water until the seaweed clears out.

Thanks for the word on Lubbers. Do you know if the dock at Jack's Jungle was damaged?
I think I'll bring a couple of chain saws down when I come. Thanks again.

Regarding Abaco Inn - it's about 90% damaged from what I understand...

Having trouble getting through to Sea Spray Marina to check on condition of my boat. Spoke briefly with Delta last week, but have been unable to reach them since then. Believe their power may still be out and am concerned that my batteries may need recharging or bilge pump won't work.

If anyone can reach Wally or Junior by vhf radio, please ask them to contact Harold Brown asap.

Many thanks!.

I just called Delta for you-you're right the phones are out, so's the internet...Wally started your boat and charged up the batteries already, so that's one less worry! I'm sure they'll call when they can.

Patti!

Many thanks for contacting Sea Spray on my behalf! I hope Wally remembered to use the throttle to shut down the engine and not turn the ignition key off until after the engine's stopped. Have my fingers crossed. Don't want to "toast" a perfectly good alternator!

Thanks again!!

Does anyone know if "anyone" is planning to take some digital photos and post them on this website showing Hopetown homes/roads? I've read that Abaco Inn was 90% destroyed and also that it is opening as planned in a month (possibly less the pool).
Thanks.

I have just updated the pictures of Frances, follow the Frances link:

Added are some aerials taken this morning flying north from north Tilloo to north elbow cay. All are from the East looking west at the shore line. Not the greatest pictures but may help some of you.

Any News of Philip on Nonchalance II? We were on a mooring ball next to him last winter and are looking forward to a return this winter.

Hey Harry, looks like from pic A43 Abaco Inn's pool is GONE. Is that the case?

AI's pool is not gone but they have a lot of damage around the pool area. The deck is gone. Work is going on now to make it all better.

Many thanks for the photos. I hadn't looked at them before. You did an excellent job of documenting the shoreline.

the time you have taken to photograph and communicate our fragile and beloved island is a huge service to all of us. Thank you very much and Godspeed at Rocky Bay from all of us.

Hello all. So glad to have stumbled upon this message board. I have been searching of news of Abaco and Lubbers since Frances. Husband and I have vacationed at Green Bananas on Lubbers a few times. We worry and pray for our Abaco friends every hurricane season. Glad to hear everyone seems to be okay. I hope the cleanup goes quickly. We live in NC, and split our time between Raleigh and our 95 year old fishing cottage on Goose Creek Island in the Pamlico Sound. We are heading there tomorrow to get the house ready for whatever Jeanne sends our way. We are still dealing with the mess Isabel left us. She mommocked us but good! Storm surge and all. Been cutting up trees for a year! Our friends and family think we are nuts, but I wouldn't trade my Island house for anything...except maybe a house on Lubbers. We are hoping to someday trade the Outer Banks for Abaco. Take care, all.

Harry,
Thankyou so much for your photos! We all appreciate the time and effort you put into doing this. It is a huge source of comfort to be able to see the island and buildings largely intact.

Best,
Amy
