We woke up to a cool, overcast day and Barometer Bob was calling for high winds and rain for the next two days. Since we were right around the corner from Hopetown (and because we had missed visiting last year) we thought that would be a good spot to hole up until the weather passed.
As we pulled into the harbour, I was blown away but the beautiful, brightly painted houses and the amount of boats. Hard to believe they could cram that many boats into such a small area. The lighthouse standing at the entrance was exactly as I had pictured it, tall and elegant against the grey skies.
After we picked up a mooring, we headed ashore to get some shopping in before the rain hit. There were wonderful shops to explore (so many lovely things and so little luggage to get it all home in!;) ) We walked through town and up over the hill to Veron's bakery. I had heard so much about this place that it was a must do on our list. Unfortunitly there weren't any pies left but there was wonderful, warm homemade bread. We grabbed a loaf and went out the back door. Vernon was in the kitchen and I really wanted to stop and say hello but he looked very busy and I didn't want to interupt.
We went for a short walk on the beach because of the winds kicking up and the clouds were moving in. I really wished the weather was better as this is a fabulous spot and I would liked to spend more time there.
On a way back to the boat, we stopped at the grocery store to pick up some supplies. As luck would have it, they had some of the Conch Lady's salad that had been made that morning. I had always wanted to try it and it wasn't disappointing!
We headed back to the boat just as the rain started coming down. It was cold and damp so we made a big pot of tea, toasted Vernon's bread and TADA!.....lunch. It was so good with Mom's homemade jam on top that we went through half the loaf. To quote BA...."piggies" ;)
We spent the afternoon snuggled up reading and playing cards while the wind howled and the rain beat against the side of the boat. Very cozy but dissappointing non the less as we only had a few days left before heading back to the cold and snow.
That evening, we had been invited to the s/v Belinda B for happy hour. Belinda and Ben are lobster fishermen from Maine (?) I think. Lovely couple, we chatted for hours.
That evening, the 4 of us curled up in the back cabin to watch a movie and still the wind and rain rocked us. Hopefully tomorrow's weather will be better.
To be continued.......
Dead end road in Hopetown
Lizard Lodge
Hopetown harbour, MaCherie is the one with the Canadian flag on the left
A cute rental place just at the mouth of the harbour (I'm sure someone can put a name to it)
