We've been coming down for the better part of 15 years and there is this one Cay that I've always said I wanted to take my boys and have a campout on when they got old enough, uninhabited Cay near Sandy, most know it, Pelican with the blown up house.

Is this allowable? I was told that it might be illegal to do so because I am not Bahamian.

I believe the official policy is that tourists are prohibited from camping in the Bahamas. I was told that this was to encourage tourists to make use of hotels, rental properties, etc in order to support that industry. I believe that Bahamians are allowed to camp.
I do not know how aggressively this policy is enforced in the Abacos, but I have never seen any campers.

That cay is part of the Pelican Cays (?) Land and Sea Park, a national park. You could probably get away with it for a night but please don't leave anything. Also the water is fairly deep and "surgy" at that sandspit that sticks out to the west so you would have to anchor firmly and/or run a line to a tree. Good luck.
