Hello,
I am coming to TC on Abaco next week and I am wondering if the 800 number for AOL works there. I am assuming that AOL does not have local numbers, but maybe I'm wrong!
Does anyone use AOL on Abaco? - The 800 number is 1-800-716-0023.
Thanks for replies!

We have used Cocotels Wireless service for last couple of years while on Guana.
You did not say whether you had wireless capability or not but if you do that is the best way to go. Just go to Internet Explorer and type in aol.com and voile! You are there..

Rather than even thinking about using the 800#, plan to sign up for wireless access, then set up another Location on your AOL account that uses the ISP/LAN Connection. You'll be much, much happier with these results.

But, where are these access points at TC. I am renting a home with a phone line. I'm guessing that I won't be able to access a wireless hot spot from there?
Also, I'm only going to be there a week, so I don't want to sign up for another service. I'll probably only be on-line for a total of 1 hour - Which is $6!
My question was - does the 800 number work?

Sinclair(webmaster) has "hot spots" set up all over Abaco for the wireless and he lives on Treasure Cay!

I'm pretty sure you can't dial any 800 numbers from over here.

No, the aforementioned 800# does not work.

How do I go about getting the wireless service? - All I need is a NIC Card? Right?

Look at the Wireless on Abaco the FAQ "sticky" thread at the top of the Board!

OK, I read it. - Thanks! - I thought when it said wireless - I thought it referred to cell phones (which I don't do).
I am staying at 104 Ocean Blvd. in T.C. - Does anyone know if this is close to a Wireless Spot? - Thanks

We spend two weeks on Elbow Cay last year and I recall our being able to dial up AOL but I can't recall whether I dial within the Bahamas to Nassau or over to Ft. Lauderdale.

You don't want a NIC, which is used to connect via earthernet. You want a wireless 802.11b/g PC card (external antenna optional). Get yourself set up and working with a hotspot at home before coming to Abaco. That will give you some education in this area, and establish that you have a working system.

I already have a 802.11b card (it's still a Network Interface Card) and a wireless network (LinkSys) at home for 2 years. I have connected to many coffee shops, airports, auto dealers etc. etc in many different cities.
My concern is where the Hot Spots are and their range.

No the 1-800 number will not work and there is no local access number for AOL.
Signing up for wireless involves a fee and you will probably need some hardware.
If you really need to check e-mail during a one week stay then your best bet is to access your AOL webmail using a local via cyber booth, one of which is located on almost every Cay and in a number of locations in Marsh Harbour.
