Does anyone who is aware of the proposed subdivision (over 150 lots) of Crown Land on GTC share my concern that this development - particularly of the land along the "Ocean Beach Road/Path" - will change the character of GTC negatively and irreversibly?

Can you tell me where to find information about the proposed subdivision? Sounds terrible but I have no knowledge of it.

Have been looking into this and informed that GTC Natives will be given first refusal to purchase the Lots. I know of some who have gotten their names on the list.
Since it is Crown Land, it must be sold (first time) to Bahamians. What they do with it thereafter is up to them. However, they have to hold the property for five years before reselling.

You can read about this in the May 15, 2010 edition of The Abaconian (http://www.abaconian.com/May%2015%202010%2048pg%20LoResRL.pdf), Volume 18, Number 102, Section B, PP 1 and 4.

this land was set aside for the young people of Green Turtle Cay nearly 20 years ago. Land on Green Turtle Cay is precious and nearly unaffordable now for the natives and this land will help so many be able to have their own home and remain on Green Turtle Cay. It is a good thing.

sounds like a great opportunity for Bahamians! this is not a resort type development. i picked up a brochure at the Island Roots Heritage Festival. the development includes a fire station, community center, public docks & commercial area, green spaces & beach access.

The objective of providing affordable land to a new generation of residents of GTC is laudible - as is the high degree of thought that appears to have gone into the planning. My concern is that this plan calls for development of dozens of homesites along what is currently a four foot wide path along the ocean beach now best traveled by golf cart. In order to make the development of so many homes practical, the plan calls for widening this path to a paved road equal in width to the main north/south road on GTC with a total width (including clearing) of 40 feet. It is the development of so many homes along the beach and a 40 foot road provided for the home owners to access their homes that disappoints me. I sincerely believe that the character of one of the most beautiful stretches of GTC will be lost forever. I would expect that this concern would be shared by locals and visitors equally. In their wisdom, decades ago the planners of the main north/south road located it away from the ocean preserving - at least until now - a very special and memorable vista.

What I want to know is, WHY the early pioneers in the US, built the cities so darned far away from the airports?
This land belongs to the Bahamian people. Do you begrudge them a home amongst their families, just so tourism doesn't have just one more eyesore to ruin their quasi-pristine view? Just sit on the beach with your back to the land, and enjoy. I don't care how many homes are built there, the beach scene will be nothing like any you'll find elsewhere! We're different folks. We don't like crowded beaches either. If we/they come to the beach and someone is already there, they're left to their privacy, and we move somewhere else. In fact, nearly everyone who lives there has, or has access to a boat, and prefer to go to a remote cay to do their beach/picnic thing.

I like what you say about beaches we will move if there is one boat and its true we who live here have so many places we go that others do not

from what I understood at the meeting discussing widths of roads etc.
they are allowing the width of the road to be much wider than necessary to make sure the homes are set back at least 40' from the beach front.
who knows if a road that wide will be put in now.
