abaco cell phones

I see a lot of information on cell phones from the states, which ones work in Marsh Harbor and which ones will not. What about a cell phone bought in Marsh Harbor? Are they reliable? Can you call the states on them and will they work on calls from the states?

Dr Ralph does not actually answer the question, which is "what happens when you get cell service via BATELCO?" I would like to know too, about whether you can get a cell plan that includes calling the US and how coverage is in Abaco.

I, too, would like to know of cell phone availability in the Abacos. We intend to stay a few months and I would really like to be able to dial home from my boat. Dr. Ralph's advice was informative and detailed but, as stated above, did not really answer the question. Maybe, months out from the storms, Batelco has resumed providing "cell kits"? Yes? No? Does anybody know? Digital or analogue? Thank you in advance for any updated info you can provide.

As a business person,I have played this shell game with cell service in Abaco,for years.Getting a phone from Batelco"if available"is probably the most bullet proof solution.GSM,is now the operating system of choice in the U.S. Grand Bahama and New Providence,now use the GSM system,however Abaco,still operates on the older TDMA,technology.Most older Verizon phones used to operate fairly reliably in Abaco,getting voice mail or even incoming calls was a problem.Cingular,offers GAIT service,these are a family of phones,mostly made by Nokia,that operate on all known operating systems.Cingular also has a standing recipirocity agreement with Batelco,so it is reliable and incoming calls,along with voice mail is forwarded.I hope this helps you,as it took me tons of money and time to learn it the hard way.
